5w20 Oil

Most of the time, I get the oil changed at the dealer & they use Motorcraft 5w20 semi-synthetic in bulk. My corner garage carries only Quaker State 5w20 but it is not semi-synthetic, just plain 5w20 oil.

Would I be asking for trouble if I let the guy at the corner do it with the Quaker State once in a while when it is convenient, and then at the dealer with Motorcraft again when having other service done? eg. OK to alternate?

Any issue with this or am I worried about nothing?

When i cant do it myself,my corner garage lets me bring in my own oil&filter.an it cost me only labor. Iam sure your garage will do the same..stay with semi/or full syn- 5w20

That MC 5W20 semi-syn is pretty good stuff. Especially for the price! You'll find it at Wal-Mart for a bit over $2/qt ($2.28 locally). It's worth a little of your trouble to get.. even if you have to buy it and have them put it in.

I really don't think you will do any harm to your engine by running the QS when it is convenient for you. Some people get way too concerned with that issue, just get the oil changed at regular intervals.

The simi or full syn provides better protection than std oil. The main difference is it's upper service limit. Syn or simi syn should be a lot higher. I would stick with the simi of full, it's cheap insurance.

I agree with Diesel man. The oil will be fine as long as you keep it changed. I've driven a lot of miles in the last 45 years with conventional oil and I have yet to have an oil related failure.

I will never change the type of oil. The dino would be fine if that was what i started with, but if I started with the blend, i would stay with it. My dad was a mechanic and something he instilled in me, right or wrong.

I was old school and thought the same thing. I had a couple of friends who used every kind and brand of oil in everything they owned for about 40 years and never had a problem of any kind. They used what was on sale, what someone talked them into, what was easily available, etc. and never used anything on a regular basis.

The engine doesn't know the difference if it is clean, the proper weight and meets the manufacturer's recommendations.

damn I just realized I bought conventional oil and not the synthetic blend like I thought. They had Penzoil 5w20 on sale at auto zone and it said it was recommended for ford's and Honda's so I thought it would be, only when I read this thread did I go outside and check...

HMMMMMMMMM now I'm really confused. Some say yes, some say no.
Guess it depends on your experience and your father's values. ;-)

PS: cant buy MOTORCRAFT at Walmart in Canada. If you want it, its a dealer only commodity. Who makes it anyway?

I think that oil co. constantly reformulate there own products all the time so it would make no difference if you changed. Maybe at one time syn and conv. were not to be mixed but I think the new oils are totally compatible. I will put my vote in for just keep clean oil in there.

Mobil1 is available in 5W-20. I've seen it on the shelves at Auto Zone and Wal-Mart.I use the Motorcraft 5W-20 Synthetic Blend with a Motorcraft FL-820S filter. I did, at one point, have to substitute a conventional 5W-20 because the Motorcraft oil wasn't on the shelves where I usually get it. It was a nice weekend day and it was time to change the oil. I don't know if it was just my ears but after changing the oil with the conventional, I noticed the valvetrain clatter was louder than usual on start-up and it didn't go away right away once oil pressure built up. I changed the oil shortly after that and put the MC Synthetic Blend back in it (back on the shelves) and the clatter went away.

Mobile 1

I buy the Mobile 1 synthetic 5W-20 from walmart, i am actually really happy because they just started carrying the 5 qt jugs. they used to carry all of them except 5W-20 in the 5qt, but they finally got it. It saves me about 5 dollars each time i buy one. I usually buy 1 when i have the money because that crap is so expensive and that way when it is time to change the oil i have 2 or 3 5qt. jugs in the shop ready to go! I love the synthetic, it might be overkill but so are all the other preventive maintenance things i do to my truck
