Aftermarket parts for the 400 Bigblock
I have a 69 Mustang, that came originally with a 351 Windsor, but years before I bought it was replaced with a 400 Big Block, I have NO aftermarket parts on it, with the factory 2bbl carb. My questions are, could anyone give me a good website, or catalog to look for aftermarket parts? Also, what aftermarket parts would you recomend? I would like to get better gas milege if possible, so I know I'll need a new carb. Also I would like to put headers on it what brand/type would ya'll recommend?, and some type of glass packs or something to make it louder. It already has dual exaust. Any suggestions or tips will be greatly apreciated. Also any specific Mustang message boards you guys know of I'd like to know about.
Thanks

Aftermarket parts for the 400 Bigblock
Summit, PAW, Jegs and your local speed shop all carry basic performance stuff for the 400 such as cams, intake manifolds, carbs, headers, valvetrain parts. You probably won't find the flat top higher compression pistons there. They are Ohio Piston part# 1282P. They also go under the name of Nylen and I understand Badger. You should be able to get them through your local machine shop or leave me an email and I'll put you in touch with a guy who can get them for you at jobber price.

Aftermarket parts for the 400 Bigblock
there are a lot of after market parts for the 400c/m. get the parts interchange book. the cams are interchangeable with the 351c, the heads are as well, intakes can be but a slace is need, and available from edlebrock or weiand. the 351c and 400 pistons can be changed as well, but to put 351c pistons in a 400 requires the rods to be bushed to find the smaller pins. if you make thses changes you will have more than enough power for your needs.
one thing, never swap the connecting rods or push rods.

Aftermarket parts for the 400 Bigblock
Funny thing is that most high-proformance catalogs don't label 351C/M/400 as either small or big block. heck, when I first go the truck, I tought 400 was a big block because it has more displacement than the 390. 400 was in a way an odd engine as it has displacement like a big block, bolt pattern like a big block, and uses same distubutor as big block while having a bore like a small block and outer size like a small block... So I guess we really can't call it a small or big block, can we?
As far as the high-pref stuff goes, comp cams makes all sorts of cams for it, from RV style to 8000 RPM race cams. Only intake manifold I found for the 351M/400 are the dual-plane style but with adaptors, you can use cleveland style ones which comes in from low end torque styles to high rpm racing styles. Heddman Heeders and Hooker makes headers for it, and you can use any distubutor make for big blocks on it as well. So while 400 may not have the best choices in the aftermarket parts out there, there are still enought parts out there to make some serious HP out of it if you look hard enough.
