I have a 99 Ford Expedition 4.6 with 170K that overheats a lot. I changed the T-stat and checked for leaks and found none. The temp would get real high especially on a hot summer day. When i'm on the highway it goes up to about 80% of the max temp. After a while it would drop back to the regular temp, then it repeats this behavior. I topped of the radiator with a 50/50 mix. The problem is a lot worst during the summer, during the winter it only overheats when at standstill. Can anyone help me?

I got to 278,000 miles before I traded it last weekend.. At this point, I started to loose coolant (suspected head gasket), rear end whine ( from a bad repair from a local shop, don't get me started) , A/C blowing cold for a minute then warm for 2 or 3... but the major issue was the tranny gave a big slip on 3rd to overdrive on a hill 10 days ago......

Now on the truck, I have never had an issue with it prior except for the windshield leak and gem module problem... The tranny was serviced very regularly and same with the oil changes... But for a 97 4.6 4x4 that pulled my trailers all over the country, including my very heavy tractor from Ohio to Alabama with never giving me problems and safely carried my kids until they were really grown, I have never had a vehicle that earned its keep like that one.. I shall miss it greatly...

It was replaced by a 2009 Taurus Limited as it was my wife's truck.. She picked the replacement...

hearing about all these high mileage expys makes me feel alot better. i picked up this '97 for $1100 a few months ago from the second owner (had it since early '99) and also my neighbor. 180,000 on the clock, never towed. still working on a check engine light issue when time allows. thanks to the guys here, iam getting closer.

I have 155K on my 1999.

Now that we have 3 cars, we only drive the SUV about 3K a year. (on trips)

I have never had any real issues. Have replaced the alternator and 4 ignition coils. But nothing else other than routine maintenance. (oil, brakes, plugs, fluids, etc)

I am getting ready to replace the diff fluid and wheel seal, that should be an adventure.
