Stock truck + $1000 what would you get?

Title pretty much says it all. Truck is all stock except for the tonneau cover which was on it when I got it. I'm going to have about $1K to spend on the new to me truck. I've done most of the maintance stuff, so I was thinking new headers and exhuast. The only other thing I want to do is put on larger tires but I was going to wait until I needed tires to replace the ones I have on it right now. So what else should I consider. And what if I only have $500 to spend (I might get a new rifle).

Truck is 2001 Supercrew 4x4 5.4 auto.

Headers will cost half of your budget. I'd just dual it out instead. I had headers on my 5.4 & they didn't help as much as I would have liked. I'd get a new rifle.

Rifle is a Remmington 700 in 308, with a synthetic stock and the stainless fluted barrel. I can get the rifle for $450!!!!

I'd buy the rifle. I shoot a Browning 308 BLR. Its a lever action. I really like it. The 308 is a great deer rifle. It doesn't kick bad & its very accurate. Snipers use it more than any other caliber. Most of the guys at my gun club use a 308 for our 600 yd range. They use the Remington target rifle like the swat cops use. Its a bull barreled model 700.
I'd just put duals on the truck. It takes about 8 hrs to install the headers & unless you plan to add more performance mods they aren't worth the time & cost. I was planning to supercharge mine & added the headers for that reason.

Yeah I'm very familiar with the 308 from my past. I'm just not sure how much I need another rifle. I have a 30.06 A bolt that has taken care of all my hunting duties in the past. I don't like to punch holes in paper so I'm not sure how much use I'd get out of the 308. The only reason I am considering it is because it's a good deal, I can get free 308 ammo and I have a Leupold Mark III tactical scope waiting for a new home.

Decisons, decisions....

Its a no brainier to me. Buy the 308. I believe you can't own too many guns. I have a model 70 winchester in 30-06. Its a great gun gut its not as accurate as my 308. Plus it gives you a spare in case one of the other guns should break down.

A Remington 700 in 308?
$450???

It amazes me that you even had to think about it...

With that and a tube bender from harbor freight you can have all the duals you want.

Well I passed on the rifle. It looked good, but it had a few bad spots on it. I didn't "know" the guy I was getting it from, and it just didn't "do anything" for me. You know when its a gun you just have to have, this wasn't it. I kept the $$$ in my pocket and I'm now trying to figure out what I want to do. I mean I want a S/S 20 gauge, and I want a 357 S&W airweight, and I want a S/A, but I also want some stuff for the truck. I realized this weekend that some good floor mats front and back are a must. I'm afraid I'm going to have to buy tires and that is going to have to come out of my new found $$$ too. So that doesn't really leave a lot for me to spend.
