I have a 1999 f250 with a v10, I get about 11.5 Mpg.

I love the truck but the gas is getting kinda expensive.
How much would I give up in power and how much better would the MPGs be if I got the same truck with a "modern" updated 5.4. I am thinking about a 2004 or newer. I would also like the front coil suspension and the turning radius it allows.

My truck is a F250 Crew Cab 4wd 3.73 gears w/ stock everything including tire size. It has 95k miles on it and runs great.

You would need 05 or newer for coil springs.Dont think you would notice much gas savings and power would be less.

 

If you want good mileage, get a small car.

I have a 2005 F250 5.4L 4x4 with 3.73 gears also. Best highway MPG has been 16 MPG and worse while towing was 8 MPG. My mixed use MPG is about 11-12. Just about every 5.4L F250 owner is in the same boat you are. Intake kits, exhaust and programmers do not gain you anything appreciable.

Best advice is to lower highway speeds to about 60-65 and keep revs below 2400 RPM. That may gain you .5-1 MPH at best.

I am in the same boat with gas prices. I bought the truck when gas peaked at $2 a gallon thinking it would stabilize and not go higher. Finally just resorted to parking it for my daily commute and bought a used beater small car that gets 28 MPG and regulate the F250 for snow day when I need the 4X4 and actually hauling something.

Thanks, I kinda thought that would be the answer, but I was hopeful that with the newer v8 maybe they did better on the milage.
I guess it is still a HEAVY truck that is not very aerodynamic no mater what engine you have.
I also heard that mods do nothing for mileage.

My advice would be to just drive what you got into the ground. If you have kept up with scheduled maintenance, you got another 100K+ left in it.

I do not think a week goes by this forum does not get at least 3-5 5.4L MPG type threads.

If you calculate how much a second vehicle costs+title+license+insurance...you probably won't be saving much. Granted you will extend the years of life on the truck but you will have repairs/upkeep on 2 vehicles as well. Just my .02!!

 

average is 14.5mpg 2006 crew cab 2w, auto with tonneau cover, I would keep the V10

 

i agree with irish hammer because by the time you get a second vehicle maintain it and insure it what are you saving in the end keep the v10.

 

i bought a f250 4x4 in 2002 with th 5.4 engine and a 6 speed, it got 14 mpg. i then put some free flowing gibson exhaust on it, and aluminum wheels, and a cold air intake on it, i then got 19 mpg, and really helped the power a lot which is very good for that size truck. but when gas got up to 3.80 a galion that just was'nt good enough, so i sold it to the first guy that wanted it and got a 1999 ranger. that thing is the worst riding truck i've ever owned and the mpg is only about 20 if that. i should have kept my 250. i'll get me another 250 in the very near future since they've screwed up the 150s looks again. if i was ford i'd fire all the designers and start over, they have'nt made a nice looking f150 since 1996.

 

I have a 2008 f-250 4X4 5.4 with cold air kit, dual exhaust and a sct tuner and avg 13 mpg and about 17 on the highway.

 

I have a 2000 2wd ex cab long bed with a 5.4 and automatic. My daily driver which includes 102 miles of highway commuting and usualy 20-30 miles in town driving 95% empty. If I can manage to stay at 65 on the 4 lane and not get run over and not spend too much time in stopped traffic I can do real close to 15 MPG but never over that and of course less in winter, less if in a hurry, less with just a bit lof load. The worst I can remember checking was just over 12, heavy (for a 5.4) trailer and fast freeway.

driving with some common sense helps mpg too, take your time, slow down, whats your hurry.

 

I have a 2008 350 crew 8'bed, w. tarnau cover, dual exaust w/ a performance muffler, K&N filter in the stock box and a Cortex programer and I can hardly tell it from stock and my milage went from 9.6 to 10.3 oh boy! Dd you do anything else? what am I missing?

 

I avg 13 mpg both city and hwy miles. The best I've seen on the highway was 17 mpg. But I was going between 60-65 mph.
