as far as bringing the rear down you should be able to pull out one or two of the rear springs to bring it down some they do sell lowering leaf springs but they are normally just spring packs with only one or two leafs.

the thing is looking good not my cup of tea but it looks good.

This is so cool of a swap that I ran out and bought a 66 short bed f100 just for this swap . Can you tell me if the rearend set up from a 90's cougar or thunderturd(the ones with ifs and rear disc ) will fit under the 64- 78 trucks ? Is the track width for the 90's thunderbird comparable to what you are doing? I was told that the track width was a little narrower whitch would give you the room needed and a little more tire width . (I havent done my research yet but I am in the progress ) I have seen the thunderbird setup under 64 fairlanes .
Some one has swapped the 66 I have bought over to power disc brakes and powersteering and it is terriable sloppy ! flat dangerous . thanks RG

WOW!! congrats on the truck purchase. I hope you enjoy it. I almost went with a 66 but I wanted the 67-72 body since my first truck was a 68 shortbed. The 03-07 crown vic front crossmember and suspension along with rack and pinion steering will bolt right in after you cut out the welded in 66 crossmember. The IRS from the thunderbird or lincoln mark 8's will also fit in the rear very well. There is a company that sells weld in plates that are very neat and reasonable in price, I almost went that way but some reason didnt. I would recomend a mid 90's lincoln mark8 IRS since they are a little beffier and come standard with disc brakes just buy some aftermarket springs from jc whitney fo about $70 for it. Also you can get the complete rear IRS from the lincoln for about $300-350 and the weld in brackets for about $400 as well all in all a very cheap reliable way to go IRS. As for the track width the lincoln/ tbird IRS is a little wider at about 63.0" or so and I think our old trucks come in at about 61.25" or so but this is no problem. I dont know if I can list the site on here or not maybe you can pm for the site to the brackets and irs info, does anyone know if its ok?

This should work on a '75 as well, right?

Given the similar dimensions, I'd love to do this w/ my '75 F-100.....

Time to watch the junk yards.....

carcrafter--post it up, it doesnt hurt to share the wealth. I found the company on Ebay. Looks to be a cool setup.

How well would one of these trucks do with an independent rear end?? It just seems odd to me to not have a leaf spring rear on a truck. I know that an IRS helps on handling and rough roads, but would this effect ride height?

BTW, the independent rears out of the 90's birds are identical to a mark's, in construction and demensions I believe. Its common in the t-bird world to swap in the independent pumpkins out of the Cobras because they are aluminum.

These rears are also prone to brake the axle shaft when subjected to high torque at the track with slicks. I dont see it being a problem for everyday use, or the once in a while cruise.

This sounds like another cool idea!!! Might have to shelve the rear in the truck for another project and go IRS, along with IFS, would it be a truck without a rough ride??

I am using a 87 CV clip on my 55. It is similiar to the pre 03 CV's, see my gallery. There are some differences in the upper control arm and the use of aluminum instead of stamped metal. Bear in mind also that pre 03 CV's used a steering box where as 03 up use a Rack and pinion.

Thanks and I am glad to help with this little problem lol. I plan on using a tilt steering column from a 78-79. The truck is a factory 4 spd on the floor and I am switching to a 4 spd auto so I need something with a column shift. I like the 78-79 column because it gives me the column shift and tilt and it looks factory, besides its cheap at $35 from the local u-pull. Can you beleive these columns go for $200+ on fleabay? wow!!

I sure am glad everyone is enjoying ths thread I have lots more pics to add in about a week when I get home from this buisness trip. I will be able to post pics of the cool shift linkage, steering column, trans crossmember and some closeups of the motor mounts with the engine out. I will also be posting up the new driveshaft I am haveing made along with the cutdown rearaxle. I know that sounds ambitious but its gonna get done one way or the other. Stay tuned....

I dont know if you have thought about lifting the back with the spring under setup but i dont see why could could not get a 2 or 3 inch lift scackel and just run with that or have you set your hart on the front and real independent.

Right now the rear is sitting under the leafs and the back fender sits 3" higher than the front fender. I originally had the axle over the leafs and the rear sat way too low for me plus I would have had to notch the frame for the axle and I would have had to raise the rear 3". Now that I have the rear under the leafs I can use some lowering shackels to bring the rear down to where it needs to be to make it level with the front. I am still out of town on buisness or I would be getting that done right now.... oh well I should be all over it next week with pics.

you know,,, you really suck!!!! my frame was what i thought as complete. sandblasted, painted, new $200 + urethane suspension rebuild, new rotors calipers and lines and you come up with this crap!!! now for my question. does this front xmember have the 4.6 engine mounts made into it or were they seperate? ive already mounted a 4.6 in my truck and the mounts had to be fabbed.

HAHAHAHA!!! I get to make you work. but not too hard

The aluminum crossmember has 2 nubs made into it that stick straight up. These "nubs" are for attaching the motor mounts directly to the crossmember so the engine has a place to be mounted. You should be able to buy some replacement motor mounts for a 06 crown vic and just bolt the motor in place. I say you should because I am not using the mod motor I am using a diesel, but in theory this makes sense.

I almost went with the mod motor in my 67 but came across a sweet deal on the diesel I have been wanting for a while, with the diesel its only a couple wires to hook up and I can run it for 15 cents a gallon on veggie oil. OH YEAHHHH!!
