cougar 2.5L/ford????

Posted in a Mercury forum and are they slow... Just kidding.
Got a misfire on 2 and it seems not to go away. I got it not long ago and now it's acting funny. Replaced plug's,wire's,coil and fuel filter for the lean code it also threw out. The misfire keeps coming back. don't know what else to do....
any help would be appreciated.

Hi, Welcome to the site!

I can't say as I'm familiar with that engine as it's not one that was put in trucks. Is it still throwing the lean code you mentioned? Any other codes?

Is the misfire constant, or does it come and go? Some general places to start that you can do on your own without sinking a bunch of money into throwing parts at it are to clean the MAF and throttle body. Also, I'd check the EGR (if it has one).

Here's a little more info that may help you out:

Yes the code for misfire is constant. the other code that comes up random is the catalitic out of range or some thing like that. I lost the paper i wrote the code's down on.

The code is constant, but is the misfire itself constant? Basically, does it seem to have a dead cylinder? If so, you need to locate that cylinder by removing plug wires one at a time till you find the one that causes no RPM drop, and then pull the plug, check it for spark and do a compression test on that cylinder.

This is one of the busiest forums on the 'Net, so most posts get read daily. I belong to a few other forums where you can go for days without anyone reading your post...

Have you gone over to the NECO (new edge cougar owner's) forums at www.newcougar.org? Lot's of us over there willing to help. Also look into the Contour Enthusiast Group, or CEG, at www.contour.org.

As for what you are describing, we have seen it mostly with plug wires, but you do say that you have replaced those. Just to cover the bases, were they brand new wires? And were the plugs Double Platinum.

If yes to both, I have seen similar issues with bad downstream o2 sensor, but it definately threw an o2 code. Also has the same DPFE issues, but again threw an EGR insufficient flow code.

Definately check over in those forums, I have the same screen name on both. I am in the Mass/Conn NECO chapter, and New England CEG chapter. Though I haven't been on CEG in forever.
