HELP Headlights won't turn off

2003 F250 SD CC, V10
My headlights will not turn off. The switch is not involved because I can unplug the light switch and there is no effect. The light switch still works because I can still use it to turn on the lights full and use high beam and the system knows they are on because the chime works. There is apparently not 12 volts going to the lights when they are stuck on as they are a little dim.

Is there a lighting relay involved that may be leaking?

Thanks,

Do you have the autolamps option? Do you have the daytime running lamps option?

If you have DRL's as soon as you turn the truck on and release the parking brake, you will have lights up front burning all the time.

I am not exactly sure about the autolamps, but I am assuming you will have a autolamps position on your headlight switch, where they turn on automatically at night.

You might want to read the owners manual to make sure.

I have no auto anything for the lighting systems.

C'mon guys, I know there are some gurus out there that can solve this for me PDQ. I am getting desperate. I have a shoot to go to this weekend and I need the Truck and Trailer. It would be most uncool to have to unplug my battery every time I stop...

Please help.

Check your main fusebox for a headlight relay. You may have two. Unplug, and see if there is a difference.

Have you tried your headlight dimmer to see if it makes a difference? jd

What's a headlight dimmer? Sorry for sounding so dumb but I am used to somewhat older vehicles without all these fancy gadgets...

The reason I had to ask all those questions, is the headlights are wired differently depending on what options you have.

If you have plain old headlights, then there are no relays that I see. There is really nothing unusual about the circuit that could make them stay on.

You already unplugged the headlight switch, so we know the stray voltage is not coming from there. What you can do next is get in the underdash fuse box, and pull fuse #30(high beam fuse) and fuse #48(left low beam) and fuse #47(right lowbeam). If they are still on, then we know the problem is from the fuse box out to the headlights. If they go out, then your problem may be in the steering column, where the high/lowbeam switch is located. Ford calls this the multi-function switch.

This is a unusual problem. Has any work been done lately, like a new stereo or a new trailer plug and brake controller? Has this truck been in an accident? Has anything else been added lately?

A headlight dimmer switch is for switching your headlights from bright to dim. Your older vehicles had(have) a dimmer switch also.

On your truck it is part of the turn signal switching, which is called the multi-function switch. As Franklin says, if there are no relays, then the problem could lie in the switch. jd

Thanks guys, that's what I'm talking about. OK, I removed fuses 47 and 48 No Joy. What is strange is that the lights are on but not 100%. More like 75 or 80%. What part could be seeking power or seeking ground through the headlight circuit? Wouldn't there be something else on that has now been affected by the new pathway?
No accidents that I know of (Truck is truly in great shape) The only thing I did recently is to put a 4" Pro Comp lift kit in. No electricals involved ro re-routed.

Thanks again guys.

Try removing #30, along with the others, just to make sure it's not the highbeam element getting voltage somewhere.

Pulled Fuse #30, no joy.
Any other ideas?

I would start following wires, looking for damage or melting. It's not going to be easy to find.
