1966 f100 and ford 9

Rearend might be shot. If this is the case I am going to replace my ford 9 with another ford 9. Truck is a 1966 engine 240 six 3 speed. What ford truck years could I use as a direct bolt in replacement? Will be going to the salvage to get the rear end.
thx.

Look for '72 and older if you want a direct bolt-in. The 73-up 4x2 9-inches are wider. Watch the gear rations though. You don't want a 3.00 with that six-banger.

What are the guarantees that the used rear end will be any better than what you have now? All the parts to rebuild a 9 inch rear end are readily available.

If you do change the rear end, all you need to do is swap in the center section. Pull the axles, remove the 10 bolts that hold the carrier to the housing, the entire carrier assembly aka pumpkin "drops out" as a unit.

1957/72 is the same. But...some 1968/72 F100's came with 31 splined axles, and even though classified as a 9, that rear end has a 9 3/8" ring gear.

He would also need to change the housing if he wanted 31 spline axles from 1968/72. The internal parts of the 9 3/8" ring gear are all different from the 9".

In midyear 1969, Ford began using...what they called...slim line differential bearings with 9" rear ends (C9AZ-4221-A bearing & C9AZ-4222-A race).

The 1973 and later 9 inch axle housings are wider.

airharley is gaining momentum as a positive member of FTE.
Personally I would go with Bill on this and buy the kit to replace all the bearings/races and seals. There are many places that sell rebuild kits for the 9 inch. If you look in the tech articles tab there is also a step by step on how to rebuild it. Or if you want you can buy a book covering it as well. I think crawling under the truck twice and getting covered in 90w oil is a worse punishment then sitting in jail with Bubba being my cot mate. All 3rd members should, at a minimum, be torn down to check the gear lash and bearings if it's your own and especially from the junkyard. You have no idea what that thing has gone through in it's life.

Yes it could set you back $200 now or it can set you back the tow truck ride, accident, more damaged parts, time working on it AGAIN, and frustration. Oh did I mention even more $$$?

I had a '72 F100 4x4 that had the large housing and wound up changing it out to a 9"
