Best Coil for Unilite Distributor in a 460 ...
I recently built a 1990 460 with 429 Cobra Jet Heads and Intake, then installed it in my Son's '49 Lincoln Cosmopolitan ... He bought a new Mallory Unilite Distributor and a "Blaster" Coil for it, so I installed both using a Ballast Resistor ahead of the Coil ... It runs great at low to intermediate rpm's, but seems to stutter and "hold back" under full-throttle ...
My questions are : Should we be using a standard Mallory Coil (Promaster) instead of the Blaster Coil (it may be for MSD ?) and is the Ballast Resistor required with the Unilite Distributor or should the + side of the Coil be getting a full 12 volts ?

you need that resister but as far as the coil goes i don't know, im using the same coil as you with no problems yet but my truck does act funny when floored but my a/f meter says am running way rich so i need to fix that and then go from there, i have 2 coils msd and accell i might change them and see what happnes.

Are you still using the duraspark setup to feed the dizzy? I had a problem with that setup on my uncles 79 F-150. We ended up putting a Mallory 6al ignition box on it and have had no problems with it since. As for the coil, the Blaster coil will work with that dizzy, no problems (he runs the MSD offroad version on his truck), keep the ballast resistor and install it as per the Mallory destructions. It's worth it to help keep that Optical module from blowing out!

Maybe that' spart of the problem right there????

Not sure what you mean ???

I will email the Mallory Tech Line and ask them ... Thanks for your input

Most of the Unilite Dizzys with the optical timing are not drop in and run. They need to have some sort of ignition box (like the MSD or Mallory 6a or 6al) to run right. The output voltage going through the optical "switch" is not strong enough to feed power to the coil. Be careful not to blow out that module as it costs about $50-80 to replace!! Been there done that, and I had it hooked to the original duraspark ignition module.
