Best Coil for Unilite Distributor in a 460 ...

I recently built a 1990 460 with 429 Cobra Jet Heads and Intake, then installed it in my Son's '49 Lincoln Cosmopolitan ... He bought a new Mallory Unilite Distributor and a "Blaster" Coil for it, so I installed both using a Ballast Resistor ahead of the Coil ... It runs great at low to intermediate rpm's, but seems to stutter and "hold back" under full-throttle ...

My questions are : Should we be using a standard Mallory Coil (Promaster) instead of the Blaster Coil (it may be for MSD ?) and is the Ballast Resistor required with the Unilite Distributor or should the + side of the Coil be getting a full 12 volts ?

Are you still using the duraspark setup to feed the dizzy? I had a problem with that setup on my uncles 79 F-150. We ended up putting a Mallory 6al ignition box on it and have had no problems with it since. As for the coil, the Blaster coil will work with that dizzy, no problems (he runs the MSD offroad version on his truck), keep the ballast resistor and install it as per the Mallory destructions. It's worth it to help keep that Optical module from blowing out!

Straight 12 Volts from the ignition switch ...

We are using a seperate 12 Volt source off the ignition switch to the Ballast Resistor ... There is NO Duraspark wiring anywhere in this installation ...

So what feeds the signal from the pickup on the dizzy and pushes the voltage up to the coil? With that Unilite, you need to have some sort of control box, wether it be the MSD or Mallory, or whatever.....

Maybe that' spart of the problem right there????

The CarQuest guys sold the Mallory stuff to my Son and said that was all he needed to make the thing work ...

I will email the Mallory Tech Line and ask them ... Thanks for your input

How many wires are comming out of the distributor? You wouldn't need a control box if you're using points..

There are 3 wires in the Distributor pigtail lead ... Red, Green, & Brown

Red goes to the + Side of the Coil
Green goes to the - Side of the Coil
Brown goes to Ground

Most of the Unilite Dizzys with the optical timing are not drop in and run. They need to have some sort of ignition box (like the MSD or Mallory 6a or 6al) to run right. The output voltage going through the optical "switch" is not strong enough to feed power to the coil. Be careful not to blow out that module as it costs about $50-80 to replace!! Been there done that, and I had it hooked to the original duraspark ignition module.

That's a problem. You have a duraspark distributor. It's supposed to have a control box. All three wires go to the control box, and it's wired to the coil.

that may be so but if he is using a hole unilight dizz and not just that kit that converts your duraspark then you don't need another box mallroy says nuthin about wiring a box in with it whats the box for ADVANCE?
