MPG ! how much are you getting ! Better MPG with Power Stoke ?

HI

I´m getting 10MPG with my 351CUI E-150, at 55MPH

how much are you getting ?

Would a Power Stroke Diesel get more MPG at the same speed (55MPH)

Sincerly

I've got an '02 with the 4.6. On the road, with summer gas, I can count on 17-18.5 mpg and that is probably averaging 70-75 mph. If I could force myself to drive 55 I suspect I could crack 20, but I just *can't*.

In the city, on winter gas, I'm getting about 13-14. Over the 60k miles I've owned the van, I have averaged 15.5 mpg.

I have a 95 5.8, and I get anywhere between 15-18. I live in suburban Kansas City, though, so I do a lot of highway driving.

I have a '95 E150 Clubwagon XLT, 5.0 and I get 12mph towing on the interstate at 80 mph.

I have to assume you have some kind of problem that is causing the poor mileage.

My 88 E350 with a 7.3 got 12 running empty at 55 and 8mpg towing a 7000 enclosed trailer. That diesel was very expensive to maintain even doing much of the work myself. Financially now the diesel is a super loser. They cost $8000 more at the time of purchase and the fuel is near .30 cents more than regular. Assuming 18 mpg with the diesel which I believe is extremely optimistic and 12 mpg for the V-10 which is pretty realistic it takes 100,000 miles just to recover the cost of the diesel engine. That doesn't take into account the increased cost of maintenance for the diesel. I would never consider another diesel.

I think you need to check your van out, unless it is a carb'd 351 with a 3 speed c6 that might be possible, but it sounds low. My old 91 E150 with the 351W / E4OD got 14 mpg no matter how I drove it.

Not sure what my 85 460 / C6 combo is getting, I'm guessing around 10 if I'm lucky.

I couldn't agree more regarding the 351W. My 91 E150 5.8l also got 8 to 9mpg city, 12 to 15mpg highway and I don't beat my vehicles. Super reliable motor but a real gas guzzler under any conditions. My current V-10 gets almost the exact same mpg's with one slight difference. It's a beast!

California vehicle

This is an interesting thread. Unfortunately, I don't have any figures, as I have been "afraid" to measure my mileage for a couple of years. Mostly, I try to avoid using my Chateau Club Wagon 5.4L V-8! E40 tranny.

Anyway, it's a "1/2 ton" vehicle. I think it weighs 5100 pounds.

As I recall, I got 15 MPG on the open road. I try to drive like there's an egg under my right foot, but my wife pays no attention to that. So I don't know what this van is really capable of. I assume I get 11 mpg around town and on our So. Cal congested freeways.

Here are some questions:

Do California vehicles really get worse mileage than others, all things being equal? If so, does anyone care to venture how MUCH worse?

Is California gasoline, despite its higher price, less efficient than other gasoline?

I was amazed to read of one poster's comments on the difference between his winter and summer numbers. I realize that winter gasoline has been partially oxygenated (combusted!) to lessen winter air pollution.

Thanks for your replies.

That sounds light for a Chateau. My standard XLT Clubwagon weights just over 5100 lbs with only one of the two bench seats installed.

The current breed of cars have little if any difference in mileage in California vs other state emissions config.

Not necessarily California gasoline. The EPA mandated "boutique" fuel blends that are specific to each major metropolitan area (thank you Bill Clinton) have a lower BTU content than the non-EPA mandated fuel. The lower BTU content means you will get lower MPG all things being equal. So you pay a higher price for a less efficient fuel. Certainly, southern California falls into this catagory.

That's common in colder climates but is unlikely to apply to southern california. In colder climates, say Michigan, an engine will run much longer on the enriched warmup map thus lowering gas mileage considerably.

I've got two E350's , both 02's. One a 7.3 and the other a 5.4. The diesels not running right and getting 10 to 11 mpg on the highway with a steady 2000 lb payload. The gas van is averaging 12 to 14 mpg on the highway. When the diesel was new it got nearly 19 mpg.
