I had to start driving the truck again, and it seems like it's going to denotate anytime soon.
It has really low oil pressure. The factory oil gage goes dead after a while; I tried to hook up an aftermarket oil pressure gauge, but I couldn't find the port. Is there a pic somewhere? Also for water, too?
1) I can see smoke out of exhaust. I can't be certain if it's either oil or coolant...is it possible to blow oil and coolant smoke at the same time? I see some blue, some white. Can't tell if they are mixing out of exhaust.
Passenger side has some sort of leak, the front corner of the head is wet. I think coolant is spewing out there. A while ago, I believe I had a bad head gasket, but now it sounds like the head itself is cracked, it pours a steady smoke. It also drips down on exhaust so I can't determine how much is coming from the engine.
It still runs and drives, but man, it smokes like Cheech. Lastly, the idle is really erratic.
Sounds like it could be a combination of both oil and coolant, since you said it is some blue and some white smoke. If you think a head is cracked, this could very well be the case.
The oil pressure port is at the rear of the block, on top, right behind the intake manifold. Also, these engines have always been plagued with low oil pressure. My worn out 400 in my '79 has low oil pressure, but my rebuilt 400 in my '53 has really good oil pressure; around 25 psi at idle and 55 psi driving down the road.
Jbrad..funny! I wish. I'd denote that thing if I attempted such thing. Edited the title for better accuracy.
Did some work on it, and found the oil had a gas smell to it and it was more liquidy. I guess either the carb or the fuel pump has been leaking into the motor oil.
I need to find the problem. Where are the areas that the fuel may leak into oil?
The fuel pump can leak oil into the oil pan. The only other source of fuel in the oil is from the carb. If the float is too high or bad the carb can overflow fuel into manifold. This will create a rich mixture and wash the cylinder walls, and eventually thin the oil. Too much fuel pump pressure can also cause this. It can be OK at idle and low RPM, but build up pressure as RPM increases. This is where it starts to dump fuel, and it can go undetected.

by the title of this thread i thought you were trying to run nitrous.
I did too, as I was reading the opening post, I kept wondering when he was going to get around to how that 400 shot had caused all these problems. From the sound of things, maybe he should hook up a 400 HP shot and take it out in style.
