4x4 and 2WD steering columns the same?

I think title pretty much says it. I am trying to buy a steering column and it is on a 4x4 truck and mine is 2WD. Mine is a 1978 and this persons is 1979. Both are power steering and auto with shift on column. Will these be the same so I could put it on my truck as a drop in? I do have my old column but it is tilt but the tilt flange in broken so I don't know if I can swap parts either.

Thanks for any help

you can use the 4x4 column, but you will need the bolt-on end to attach to the rag joint.

you can score one off some passenger cars or possibly from ford. the tilt wheel has one on it when used on a 2wd truck.

this may help a bit. I'm trying to find other threads using the search function

If the column has the "removable flange" on it, it will work. You can tell right away if yours has it or not. See the pics in the above threads.

I remember when me and my friend removed the column I took off the 12 pt bolt on the rag joint and then we pulled the column out. There wasn't anything attached to the end of the shaft because it is just the splines and the lower bearing in the plastic. (maybe the part is still attached to the rag joint?) What was orignially in the truck was a TILT column with automatic and power steering. The one I was looking to get is a 79' NON TILT from a 4x4. It does seem to me that I will not be able to use these because the bottom of the 4x4 shaft in entirely different and longer? Unfortunately some of dennis's pics were not showing.

I just found this pic that shows my rag joint and steering box so maybe someone can see what I am working with.

I've done this swap before. All you need is the flange that slips over the splines on the column and bolts to the rag joint on the box. I have 2 of them if can't find one locally.

Steve

After looking at your picture you have the flange on there now. All you should have to do is slip the splined shaft back in and tighten the bolt.

1969F2504X4 - You said you have two columns that you would be willing to sell? I can't find any local so I have been calling junk yards on car-part.com but still no luck. I don't need the steering wheel. Just need one that will work on a power steering, auto shift on column, and will fit my 1978 2WD truck. How much do you want for one shipped to gulfport ms 39507? I tried to PM you but it said you don't receive PMs.

Well I found a U Pull It near by that I didn't know was there and found a steering column that came off a 78 2WD truck power steering NON Tilt. It all looks like my old one so when I get back to base and try to put it in I will find out. I took the rag joint and all that was on it. Off topic of this thread but I also found a bunch of other things that I have been wanting like ignition switch(with key) , wiper switch, door mirrors, and washer resevour for $48. Not a bad day at the junk yard.

As 1969 said I think it will drop right in, I will let you know.
