OBD codes won't tell anything about the ABS system since the ABS system doesn't tell the PCM what's going on fault-wise. You have to read the ABS codes to learn what the ABS computer is squawking about. Reading ABS codes means you need a more-capable scan tool than tthe common, inexpensive ones.

That's what I meant - there are cheap ABS code readers

I know autozone won't give you ABS codes, I ended up buying the one above, gives me all I need to know! It will tell you which wheel is reporting the fault then it is likely either the tone ring or the sensor itself..

I know this is an old thread. I have a BlueDriver scan tool that will read speed sensors and provide DTS codes for signals missing. It will also provide other fault codes. If I was a manager at Autozone or Advance, I would pick up one of these units. If you're in the Reading, Pa or Spring City, Pa area, I'd be happy to read codes for free. Lately my rear sensors are sending bad signals to the 4x4 module. I get a shift interruption somewhere between 15 and 20mph and then the abs and 4x4 will come on. Things I've replaced. Front wheel bearings, both. Rear passenger wheel bearing, all cats, intake manifold, rear calipers, rear rotors, rear parking brakes, u-joints in drive shafts, and soon, two lower control arms. Anyway, at 182k, I can't complain. I have the 4.6 v8 in my unit. I believe that in my 04 explorer, I only have the differential sensor.
Things that lead me to suspect tire tread and brake pressure may attribute to the faults. What happens is that sensor on the top of the diff tells the pcm which relays to the 4x4 module that the tires in the rear are traveling at a different speed. All of the sudden the front end starts trying to engage. I'm not sure if it is a sensor or differential issue, but I'm going to start small. It goes away for a little and then comes back. Usually after I've traveled about 60 miles or so in a day.

They have the tone rings if I recall. Only real difference is the tone ring for the explorers is in the differential. You'll still get the same DTC code, correct? I certainly did. The codes for the explorer will read both left and right rear speed sensor where with an Escape I would imagine it will just read one or the other. Either way, missing signals in any ford all wheel drive/4 wheel drive will give you the same results. Flashing 4x4 and solid ABS light. I'd put my money on bad tone ring/wheel sensor. We have an 02 Escape too:-) I think there is a differential back there. I'll have to confirm that. If you're in my area, I can read your codes too:-)
