7.3 missing and backfiring threw the air cleaner

Hey all, was wondering if I could get some light shead on a problem. My dad has a 96 powerstroke with 230K in it. He parked it becouse it had a miss. I whent out and started it. it took a little bit to fire. when It did it had a constant pop or back fire threw the air cleaner. when id give it some rpms the pop would speed up. It also has a ruff idle like a miss. Im thinking that it lost a valve but not sure. has anyone had this happen to them yet? there is no check engine light that comes on. I did some reading on the forum but could find anything like this. any help would be greatly apreciated.

He said that he was driving slow under no load and the truck started the symptoms, so he drove it back to the house (approx 1 mile)

hmm, thats not good or normal, usually its from the sd's or a manual truck that was overrevved, you could have had a valve stick, definatly dont run it tillyou get those covers off
