You're going to get quite a bit of rubbing with 35". 33" are kind of crowded, but fit.

We're putting 33's on the project truck and it has plenty of clearance to go bigger, but it has a quite a bit of lift. Chet, what do you have on your son's highboy? It sounds as if you've tried 35's on it, so I presume this is the voice of experience?

I screwed up. They are 35s on my son's highboy. They do have a tendency to rub in a tight turn. My confusion is that he was considering going to a larger tire at one point and I must have misplaced that brain cell.

Sam, I used to have 35's on my old stock 73 F250 4x4. I think the clearance should be the same as the 73, just a little different body style (bump side vs dent side).
I think they'll work fine as long as they're not too wide. Though you might get a little rubbing on bumpy corners. I was running 12.50x35x16.5.
I also powered that beast with a 460, so there was no horsepower issue at all.
What gears are you running in that truck? Is it a 4 speed? I would imagine that you have 4.10's and a 4 speed trans. If so, even with a 360, with 4.10's, you'll be geared pretty low, so those tires shouldn't hurt HP too much. However, more power is always a good thing in my book...

I think you'd be fine with that. Those 390s are strong engines. I believe it would be plenty of umph.
Another place to ask would be the 67 - 72 forums. That way, if there was anything about your specific year that would be a problem, you could find out about it first. Rather than after you buy the tires.
But I think you're good to go, personally.

I wouldn't worry about the 35" tires. I would worry a bit about the brakes. Does your truck have any kind of power assist for braking? Those old drum brakes might be a bit of concern.

Yeah, the 390/360 will turn them. Just make sure that you can stop them.

As to detail: my son's tires are 35", 16.5 rims, and 12.5 tread width. It has a nice stance, but doesn't look like a monster truck. It looks like it can take whatever is thrown at it.

Chet, where are you getting rubbing at, on the leaf springs? One common problem with putting wider, all-terrain tires on the front of a leaf sprung truck is that the lugs on the tires can rub at steering lock. Many folks don't think to adjust the steering stop bolts when they encounter this problem., My Rover had the same thing when I got it, a simple adjustment and I don't have to fight it anymore.
