Have you checked your steering box oil lately?

It's easy to forget that the stock manual steering boxes hold oil and it needs to be checked. I checked mine today and it was dry as a popcorn fart. The British Biker mantra applies here: when it stops leaking, it's out of oil!

I often over look it, thanks for the reminder Ross.
It`s generally 80-90 weight gear oil.

and never ever fill it with grease like many knuck heads did instead of fixing a leaky seal.

Has anyone ever Litmus papered a popcorn fart to see how dry it really is? Thanks for the heads up, Ross.

I've also used STP in a leaking steering box. Works very well...

Have you checked your steering box oil lately?

Guys,
I know I'm a little late on this one. I checked my steering box level today and it's low, what a surprise. My truck does have a little play in the steering, maybe this will help out. One of the po's put grease in, when I took the top off, there was grease inside the cap. Someone put a cotter pin in the hole in the top cap, is that suppossed to be there? One more question before I pilfer some 80/90 oil from my father in law, should it be full all the way to the top? It does say Heavy Gear Oil on the cap!!!!!!
Many Thanks...
Jeff

Have you checked your steering box oil lately?

Ross,
Thanks for the information. I think someone tried to vent my steering box cap, they drilled a hole in it. I am going to have my father in law weld over the hole. Now I know why there's gear oil over the bottom of my engine.
I got some 80/90 today to get all over my garage floor...

Jeff
