Doesn't sound right to me. The steering wheel to steering gear distance is the same no matter what.

that's what I figured too, but I wanted to make sure. I know there is some play in the shaft, but it may not be my source of the clunk, but it is on my list of things to check as I go

The hunt begins - what's this ?

Got home from work, jacked up front end and began the hunt for the clunk. While I was poking around the drivers side suspension I found something that looked abnormal, as far as rivets go. One was kind of shiny while the others were weathered. I wiped it off with a rag and pulled a washer ?? off of it. This was just in front of the front bump stop, drivers side on the frame.

Guess I could try and describe it but did take some pic's and uploaded them to my gallery .. sorry I know I need to get on web-shots. Will try and do that next weekend for sure. Second pic in gallory is the rivet or ? Third pic is the washer that came off in my hands which feels kind of rubber like, maybe a bushing, not much left of it? Feel free to copy and post for others if you want.

If some of you front end experts could take a look I would appreciate it. The other side (passenger) does not have this so I have nothing to compare to. Don't like the look of it though. Could this cause my clunk ?

Thanks in advance, Jim

I checked my truck and I do have those rivets there. One of them is different than the other. It sticks down about 1/2 to 3/4 fromt he frame. I think it is for the engine crossmember. is there any type of rust bleed from around it? it certainly looks suspect in the pics being nice ans shiny.

I did not see any but will check that out tonight. On the shiny rivet does yours have a washer or something or just the rivet? That washer in my pic's came off the shinny rivet. Only thing holding it there was road crud, but it was around the rivet, pulled right off.
