What Motor Do I Have? Any Number Crunchers?
Hi Folks,
I was in another post trying to find out what engine I have in a 1972 Ranchero 500. The subjuct was a little off so I thought I would post here for better response. Here are the numbers I could find. Any one have a way to tell me what motor I have? The VIN says "N" (429) but I am sure that is not the case!
Block: D1AE-6015-A2C
Intake: D7OE-CB (Firing Order: 13726548
Head: D5AEA-2-A (driver's side)
Exhaust Manifold: D5AE-9431-AB (Driver's side)
Axle code: 6
Trans Code: U
Other: The water "neck" comes out of the passager side of the BLOCK and not the intake. It has a 2V EGR Motorcraft Carb. Small size spark plugs. The intake measures approx 13" wide. I pulled a valve cover off and it has "staggered" valves (not all in a row).
Does any of these number helps to identify what motor & Transmission I have?

A 351C intake is about 11.75" wide. The mismatched parts most likely means it was a rebuilt exchange motor. TheyIt could be a 351M or 400. The 351M should have a .75" wide harmonic balancer vs 1.5" for the 400. The cranks have different part numbers. Remove a spark plug and angle a piece of wire to touch the top of the piston. Measure piston travel by having someone turn the crank by hand. The .5" difference should be obvious. 351M-3.5" 400-4" stroke.

It is an odd swap. I've never heard of anyone swapping a 400 for a 429/460. Rebuilt exchange engines don't include exhaust manifolds. The motor mounts are different also. Someone went to a little trouble to make it fit.
Does a '72 Torino have shock towers? Integral power steering box?
What are your plans for the motor?

>box?
>I meant Ranchero, I thought it was the same chassis.
no shock towers - short upper & long lower control arms, coil springs from frame to lower arms, shocks in center of springs. same as torino. crappy steering box/pitman arm/idler arm setup. looks like about a hundred pounds of steel just hanging on the front end...
it's crying for a power rack & pinion...
rear is a 4-link setup
motor mounts "appear" to be $26 at autozone. for '75 ranchero w/ 400 it said "see diagram". clicked on it, got no diagram... so i looked up '77 cougar w/ 351M (same mounts?) and it said $26

It must be the same as the Full Size Fords, TBird, Lincoln and '74-up Cougar. They were Tanks.
'71 Ranchero has shock towers, rear leaf springs and was a unibody. It reminds me that 400s never came in a car with shock towers.
Here is a supension guide for old Fords. http://www24.brinkster.com/cmcsweden/Susplinks.asp
At the bottom there is an article about a budget R&P conversion. It could be adapted to other cars. TCP sells theirs for $2500. http://home.pacbell.net/ssixto/automotive/R&P/R&P.html
