Note: The following may be somewhat reversed, with the oilcap on the right valve cover, and the smog valve on the left valve cover.

The 1973/79 Ford Passenger Car Parts Catalog illustrations are rather vague.

One illustration shows the 351M/400 the same, another illustration shows only the 400 engine. The 400 is somewhat different than the following.

1975/79 351M/400

Oil cap: Drivers side valve cover, front.

The knurled oil cap twists into the cover by a 1/4 turn. The cap has a hole in it to accept a grommet and 90 degree plastic nipple. A moulded smog hose fits into the nipple, and runs to a steel tube, where it's clamped on. From there, the tube goes to the inlet tube-front on the carbs EGR spacer plate.

Passenger side valve cover illustration in the parts catalog shows a rubber grommet twisted into the cover, right rear.

The smog valve fits into that grommet, the hose from the smog valve runs to the backside of the aircleaner where it connects to a nipple.

1975/79 400

Rubber grommet in left front valve cover, 90 degree plastic nipple into the grommet. Moulded smog hose from nipple to air cleaner inlet tube-front.

Right valve cover-rear. The knurled oilcap twists into the cover. the oil cap has a hole in the center that accepts a rubber grommet. Into that grommet is pressed the smog valve. A moulded smog hose runs from the valve to a metal tube where it's clamped on. The metal tube goes into the inlet tube (front) of the carbs EGR spacer plate.

Yep thats the oil fill. Gets slippery with oil on the cap. Makes it hard ti grip to turn off to fill. That is what mine has and the PCV valve on top.
