96 B4000 Frontend Driveline Grinding Noise

I have a frontend driveline grinding noise that ONLY occurs when the hubs are engaged and while coasting. Doesn't matter if the transfer case is set to 2wd or 4wd. The noise goes away when giving it some gas... even the slightest amount. Sounds like it is coming directly under the engine, not off to the side. My initial thought was the u-joint... it had rusted up once before. I'm driving a 96 B4000 with manual hubs (thanks to everybody that recommends them). Any thoughts?

I suggest CVs... May be boot is bad, water washed greeze out and CVs are worn inside. Many year ago I had FWD car. Bad boot was a usual problem causing exessive CVs wear..

It's only happening when the hubs are engaged. Would bad CV joints and/or bearings be effected by hub engagement?

When the hubs are disengaged the drive line is not moving, hubs engaged driveline is active all the way to the T/C.

Thanks for the suggestions. This gives me a good start on what to look for. Hopefully it's obvious (ripped boot).
