Most 250s had D44s. The easiest way to tell the difference between the two is the 60 will have significantly larger hub bodies on them, 4.5" to the D44s 3" or so. The 60 will also have kingpins, the 44 balljoints.
So did all 78-79 F-250's have D60's in them? I thought they used a lotta 44's or is that just a later model thing? If so how do you tell the difference between the HD44 and D60? If the tag does happen to still be on there, what numbers do you look for?
A D60 in a f250 is hit and miss. The F250 "Snowfighter" had a 60 up front. But the rest had 44's. You can look at the VIN tag on the door to see if it's a 60. Under "axle code" the last letter/number will be "R" if it's a 60. Of course the Holy Grail of Ford trucks is the 79 F350 4x4.

Ford put the 44's and 60's frt axle under the f250.There where 250's that did't have the Sno-fighter package (4500 lb gvw) yet they had a frt d60.I don't mean to be rude, but I have no idea what you mean by a R on the dr's axle code designation tells a reader whether or not the frt axles a 60 or not.Where did you get that from?
Your correct, but that's pretty much all ya need,By going by the rear you know what ratio you have and then.People can either tell by looking at the frt hubs or reading the numbers/letters stamped on the frt pumpkin or the pumpkin metal tab.Thers nothing else to be had code wise about the axles. If ur thinking about the last letter by the axle code part on the dr tag I believe that denotes pwr steering and or something else.I'm sure someone else will clarify that.

Let's say you had a F250 with a D60 rear axle with 3.54 gears and a L/S. The axle code on the VIN tag would read "C7". If your front axle was D60 then there would be an "R" after the 7. The letter "J" denotes power steering.
