Power Boost - '47 1 Ton

I plan to install Red headers on my re-built engine. It's an easy way to get a power boost. The engine is stock. It is, after all, a 1 ton. I also plan to install an overdrive to get about 50 mph top speed. I'm curious to know if it's worth while raising the compression by installing aluminum heads. I've heard the stock engines can be prone to overheating. Would aluminum heads help here?

Thanks

Peter

What kind of engine are you worknig with? I assume a flathead, since you're talking about RedsHeaders?

If so, you have to be careful on the flatties, or you can have the valves smack into the higher compression (smaller chambered) heads without some prep work on them.

But yes, in general raising compression ratio and adding a freer flowing exhaust is good for more power and a more efficient engine

Yes, it's a 100 HP flattie. Thanks for the feedback.

If you put the new heads and headers on, check some swap meets and find yourself a dual carb intake.

keep in mind on a flattie high compression heads flow less then factory heads. Find some eab heads and swap in a cam with higher lift and a tad more duration. If you go with duel carbs you will need a new distributer. I am of course assuming you have an 8BA style motor.

Thanks F6Guy. The engine is a 79Y. Being a 1 ton there's a limit to how fast I want to go, considering the practical limitations. I think I'll stop at Red's Headers and a dual exhaust. The main concern is gearing. When I get it re-assembled (purchased not running) I'll see how slow it is. If it's too much of a frustration getting around I might add an overdrive.

I picked up an OD for my truck. I have not installed it yet but to give you an idea my final drive is 5.83:1 and I can run around all day at 50mph at around 2800 RPM.

Thanks. That's encouraging. My final drive is 4.87:1, so 50 mph sounds like a realistic and comfortable possibility - without OD.
