We have an 08 Hybrid AWD with 2000 miles on it. We are getting 28 miles to the gallon highway/city driving with high winds & temperatures around 0 degrees F. I think this is very good. Any comments?
sounds pretty good to me. There is a huge difference between winter and summer fuel economy in northern climates. You never really hear anyone discuss the differences though, but it can get pretty brutal in certain conditions. You should see some really good numbers once we are off winter gas, combined with warmer temps.
With only 2000 miles on your FEH, you are still breaking it in. In the first few thousand miles the car is still loosening up you are also still learning how to drive it efficiently - if that is in fact your goal.
But 28 mpg in bitter cold weather is excellent. Cold weather is the worst enemy of the efficiency of these cars due to the loss of battery capacity. Wait until you see how well they do in the warm weather.
Sounds excellent to me. Last Sunday drove in -15c temp for 2 hrs on very icy roads (14 overturned vehicles) at 90kph. I suspect it was in 4x4 most if not all the time. Converted it averaged a stunning 19 mpg. Take the 28!
Is it just me or is the difference in prices of the Escapes a bit...overkill (the hybrids) for that fuel economy? I get 20mpg on the interstate and 17.5mpg city on my 04 Expedition with a 5.4 o.O

it all depends on the kind of driving you do and what your needs in a vehicle are. If you do mainly city or suburban/semi-rural driving and don't need anything larger, then 35-38 in an Escape hybrid isn't beyond reach. 30++ on the highway is easy in almost any temperature range. Usually I do better. It doesn't take too many years to make up the premium for the hybrid.
But if you are getting 17.5 mpg in city driving in an Expedition, then you are setting records and beating the EPA rating by close to 50%. I could barely get that in my V6 Escape.
I'm a lightfoot I'll admit. I don't gun it very hard at all unless i'm showing off *yes Expy's can do doughnuts and burnouts and tailslides if you do it right* but most of the time i'm going grandma easy. I've never seen it below 14.7 on the city. 20.4 maximum, doing 65 on the interstate. When I did 80mph on the interstate it went down to 18.6mpg. Maby it's because i do so much maintenance on the vehicle?

Agree that's good and agree that winter temps degrade mileage. I find that when all components, battery especially, reach some "optimal warm" temp, my MPG increase dramatically.
You have the world's most fuel efficient Expedition. I borrowed my brother-in-laws Expedition for a trip and drove 80 mph on a trip in the midwest and averaged 13 mpg. Consumer Reports got 18 mpg on the highway in their test and that is essentially a 65 mph steady state test.

Well this is reports of the lie-o-meter. I gained abut .5-.8mpg since i put on the delta Flow Flowmaster exhaust on too. I reset the lie-o-meter every tank.
