How about a possible oil leak in the turbo. The turbo heats up quickly and so could expand enough for the leak go away while it is hot and the drip oil in when it sits and cools down?

Remember the type of fuel that your truck burns, (Diesel Fuel) which is a oil distillate,
very normal for this to happen. Especially when very cold. All diesels have this condition. There is almost always a little unburned fuel left over from a previous burn, thats what the blue smoke is. However it should clear up almost immediately. You will see this condition in everything from a Army Tank, to Bulldozers, Semi Trucks, and Train locmotives, and yes even our beloved Super Dutys. Its actually a good thing, because thru the process parts became more lubricated. Relax, Cruise that turbo.

Grizz, I hear and understand what you are saying, but why didn't this happen last winter? Same temperatures as last year. I'm just a little nervous because my warrantee is up in 2 weeks.

Hey Gone....are you using a fuel additive?

I noticed that when I was being too generous with DK, mine puffed blue on start. I cut back to what's recommended and the blue puff has gone away. Mine's an 03 with 62K on the clock.

Since then, I've paid closer attention to the quantity of additive that I use when I fill.

I did have a seal replaced in the turbo last winter. I don't think it changed much. If it did, it is back with full force now.

Joe, I was using it but stopped to see if it went away. I saw no change so I will go back to using the additive. Chuck

Chuck, in my case the thing that made the difference was sticking to the recommended dosing at refueling.

Like I said, I got lazy and was overdosing and in my case, it made a difference.

Usually if your puffing some black smoke at cold start up it's b/c you're running a tuner. I had white smoke without a tuner and now with one, I get black smoke........

Mine smokes all the colors of the rainbow... its beautiful haha. Seriously though, I get a bluish white puff with a lil mix of black smoke. I would be concerned if it smoked as you drove up the street, or if you had a lack in power. I have no cat, and I expect to see more smoke than if I had the cat in place. However, when one of my injectors went bad, it smoked a bluish white smoke up until it was almost completely warm, and I had a major lack in power.

Now this is an interesting subject....

I have had my 05 through 3 winters now. First winter, didn't blow anything at all even on the coldest mornings, also was stock. Second winter, blew black smoke at start up and blew a head gasket eventually (Due to running a tunner that winter.) This winter my truck has either been stock or on a low setting on the tunner or wisely driven on the high setting, and now blows the blueish/white smoke on start up until the engine gets a little warm. This morning was the warmest morning yet for us, 60 degress and still blew blue/white smoke for a few minutes.

So to say that just because it is a diesel, that it should be blowing smoke is just BS in my personal opinion. I have this diesel as my personal vehicle and have a 05 6.0 and 99 7.3L at work as delivery vehicles and neither one of them blow any smoke. Also, mine didn't blow smoke the first year. And like stated above, I highly doubt if you walk onto a ford lot and start up a 6.4L, that it will smoke at all.

I have had my truck in for this, and they replaced my ICM relay and the ICM , and it helped for a week, now it is back to where it was. There has to be some reason for this.

Just my 2 cents.

My 06 - two winters and still no smoking. I would agree that it is not normal.

It may not be that terrible though, it may only be minor oil leakage into engine that won't get any worse for a long time. However - If the truck is under warranty, I would certainly advise to continue trying to get Ford to address it!

My truck doesn't continuously smoke, just a puff right when it starts but hasn't done it since I used a cetane booster

My truck puffs a little when I first start it, then clears up. When it warms up it runs like a scalded dog (w/o a tuner, with 37's on it). I ran heavy equiptment for 20 years and everything I ever ran blew a little smoke when it first started, some more than others. It doesn't bother me that it puffs a little when I start it. If/when it gets really bad I'll fix it then, until then I'm not really all that worried about it. Seems everyone says it never smoked the first year, maybe it has something to do with breaking in the motor? Just my .02

I've heard from a person that I trust to be correct that synthetic oil doesn't burn blue the same way that regular oil does, is this true? If so then I've recently switched over to synthetic oil and the blue puff was still there with the synthetic which would rule out oil then right?
