Oil Sending Unit removal?

How do you remove the oil sending unit at the back of a 400? I have tried sockets but none fit! Does it take a special tool. I am changing to a mech. guage.

If you are replacing the sender just grab it with a pair of water pump (arc joint) pliers.

Is your sender for a gage or idiot light?

I have replaced them but it has been a long time. I don't remember the tool I used but maybe someone will have done this recently and remembers.

Thanks for using FTE!

7/16 wrench down near the bottom- unless it's already been attacked by water pump pliers.

If you have the guage it has a wrench place just under the bell on the bottom side. I think it's 9/16 I can't remember. I just did mine last weekend. I put a piece of steel pipe with a T fitting in the back of the block. Then I ran both the mechanical and the factory guage off of the T fitting. If it't the idiot light then it may or may not have the wrench flats on it depending on who made it. Then you are stuck with the pliers method.

It is the light! I can't see under the sender unit.

It's all about being blind. Sometimes you just gotta close your eyes and feel with your fingers. Either that or just grab it with a pair of vise grips and go for broke.

Most idiot light oil sending units use a special socket. Vise grips will do it if you have room, otherwise you may need to buy/borrow that special socket.

When I replaced mine, I used a crescent wrench. Got the scuffed knuckles to prove it!!!

Steve

I see by your name that you have traveled a rough and rugged road?

Wimps!

I just grab it and twist it with my bare hand.

Especially when it is HOT!
