I couldn't believe it....found that place somewhere in TX when i followed a link in another thread....I guess i'm being naive thinking, "NO WAY would anyone fall for that"

Ripoff? I dono.
Seems like they're just hooking up there scan tool to see what version (or flash) the PCM has, and to see if there are any trouble codes. I know of Dealers that charge $75 for the same thing. (Now that's a ripoff!)
