What fuel mileage can I expect?

Hey, all just joined the forum. I was wondering what fuel mileage I can expect from a 7.3 Powerstoke. ... I have seen a truck on a car lot.. as I was driving by. I am planning on checking it out this weekend, so cant give any model specifics yet, It is a 4 door model, and looks pretty long to me.

Was just wondering if you could give me a ballpark figure, on city/Hwy mileage.

Thanks..

Will keep you updated.

Welcome to FTE!!! As far as millage goes, You could expect anywhere from 10-15 city, and probably 12-20 highway. The range is so big because it depends on a lot of things, how well truck wai maintained, mods, how heavy you are on the pedal, ets... If you decide to buy it, let us know and we'll walk you through some mods to get some more millage and Get-up-and-go to it. Good Luck!

x2 what Robb said...Welcome to FTE. Before you buy you might want to get to pointers on the things to look for when buying one of these trucks.

Here's a few links:

If you have any specific concerns just ask away, there are many knowlegable guys on this forum that can help. There a a few that will help you spend you $$ too, It's called PMS (Powerstroke Modification Syndrome) Most of us have it.

I've got a crewcab longbed, its about 23' long. I also have 3.55 gears, check that truck as it could have 4.10 which would lower mileage slightly when unloaded. Daily mixed driving I get around 16-18mpg, while pure highway I get 20mpg. There is a short term relief of PMS, just look at your bank account

My 96 4x4 long bed CC gets 15 in the city and I saw over 21 mpg on the hyway @ 55-60 MPH empty. It's got 4:10 gears but you gotta drive like there's an egg under your foot. Not bad for a 7200 pound box.

Well I went and looked at it. It is a 92 Ford 1 Ton, 4dr, 2WD, with a full length bed, It has 2 fuel tanks, It was a County owned vehicle, and has 122,782 miles on it. Has an overdrive trans, not sure what kind. It has A/C working, and does not leak anything, has new front brakes, and brake fluid in the master cyl looked like new. Dealer is asking $3400, but admited he would come down, The body is not great looking, but seems solid... The truck fired right up after the "Wait light" went out... no smoke I could see.

Drove well, and rode well for a 1 Ton truck. On the interstate I got it to 70MPH easily, and at 70MPH the engine was turning 2,000 RPM. Don't know if this would help figure out the Diff ratio...

It has the International 7.3L NA Engine. It had these stickers on it
Family NNV07.3DAAD
NNV07.3DAB1

On the valve cover it had.

International 7.3L And then this to the right of that.

A166 ----------- A185
FuelRate 53.5 ---------- 58.5

I will post some pics and video I took, when I can.. having trouble getting pics off my cell phone cam.

Thanks..again for your help.

If it's a 92 it's not a powerstroke, powerstroke was made from 94.5 and up.

I realize it is a IDI engine.. and not a PowerStroke... But what are your thoughts on the truck.. was the International engine a good one? I am sure the maint was done regularly since it was a County truck... It is a NON Turbo engine.. which was a disappointment to me. I drive and International 25ft Box truck now... and it has the DT466.. in my opinion its a piece of crap compared to the Detroit's and Cummins, and Benz's... bad power and it gets bad mileage. But this is a whole other catagory.. so I am not trying to compare the two.

Here are some pics and a couple short video clips.

And the Videos.
Engine Running

Walk around the truck.

Couple more unrelated just for fun... The big rig I drove for 2 years..
Bobtail running thru the gears... missed 5th.

And pulling an empty trailer.

Thanks.. for all your help... what do you guys think.. would it be a decent truck.. or should I look for something else.

Ken

My last truck was a 1987 6.9 idi engine, basically the same thing as the 7.3, it only made to 400K+ miles, 2 trannys...that's it. Damn body rotted right off it. My neighbor bought it and it's still running but very ugly. I loved that truck...best $$ I ever spent. It was mainly used to haul a 32 foot offshore with it..maybe 13-14K pounds total. My only complaint was the lack of acceleration but it kept pulling as long as you held the pedal down. Oh yah, it left a lot of soot on the side of the boat too.

Well, it does have a "710" cap on it.

I don't know what to tell ya. I'm sure that there are guys on this sight that have had exper. w/the non-turbos. I personally have never driven one.

You do realize that international made the powerstrokes to right?
