Smile '75 F250 460 - Need Help! -

I just purchased a 1975 Ford F250 with a factory installed 460! 48,000 originals miles! I am trying to go through all the fluids and make any other necessary adjustments. However, it has been a bare to figure out I actually have...

1st question: How can I tell what year my engine and trany are? The truck is a '75 but I was told the original owner had the dealership install the 460 and HD C6 in '77... How can I tell? visually it checks out great but I want to make sure what year I'm working with when changing fluids and replacing parts.

Then... for the trany - Type F for '75 and Mercon for '76 and newer, am I right?

Transfercase - 80-90? synthetic okay? whats best to use?

FT/RR diffs - 80-90? synthetic okay? again, whats best?

Next, I want to make any immidiate necessary adjustments... The engine is complete stock... Any suggestions? I was told I need to have the distributor worked on and timing advanced... I'm having this done next week. I'd like to get more torque out of her. I'm using as a daily driver as wells as to pull my boat my 4000 lb wakeboard boat around town and up and over the passes...

THANKS FOR THE HELP!

On the heads just below the spark plugs there should be some casting numbers..like

D3VE-A2B

If you pull a valve cover and check in the oil galley you should see another set of casting numbers that may look like this
*4L23*

post the numbers I have referred to.

1971 to midyear 1979 429/460 bare block casting number: D1VE-6015-AB

Midyear 1979 and later 460 bare block casting number: D9TE-6015-AB
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
VERBATUM from the 1973/79 Ford Passenger Car & 1973/79 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalogs ~ Section on available lubricants:

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID "MERCON" USE ON 1977 and later C4 - C6 & JATCO TRANSMISSIONS ONLY. See owners guide for proper application.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All C6 transmissions have an ID code on a metal plate, left side of the trans above the manual control lever.

All the prefixes of the codes for C6's with a 460 engine begin with PJB.

Whatever the suffix is...determines the actual year of usage.

Examples: PJB-J5 or J6 / PJB-L5 or L6 = 1976 F100/350 with a 460 engine.

btw: JATCO was an auto tranmission Ford used in the 1970's on some Ford taxicabs.

Numberdummie - as for the C6 prefixes... J5 - J6 ?? vs. L5 or L6 ?

L6 = 1976 L5 = 1975 ?? then what does J5 or J6 mean?

Thanks a lot!
