Unhappy Turbo not working!

The turbo kit i have for my 6.9 pickup is a bit strange but should still force air into my intake. Its one that bolts straight to the driver's side exhaust manifold, and runs one down pipe(not connected at all to the passenger exhaust manifold)straight down along side of the driver's side manifold. I just hooked everything up over the past few days, and when i fired it up today, the turbo did not spin at all, just a little at high RPM....any thoughts. I need help. Thanks.

I'll get some pictures for you later on today, but I can spin it good with my finger. It is an older kit made by Turbo Engineering INC, it runs a Rajay turbo. I just set it up and I didnt tie the downpipe into the rest of the exhaust yet.

Should the turbo be spinning at idle? If the turbo bolts on the exhaust manifold, all the exhaust should go through the turbo from the driver's side. Right? There is two outlet flanges on the turbo exhaust manifold, one on top for the turbo and one where the factory exhaust bolts on there should be only one, that is what makes sense to me.

Yes, it should spin at idle.

So here's a question- your wastegate flapper isn't stuck open, is it? (assuming that's a wastegated turbo)

If it's open, or even just partly open, it'll prevent the turbo from boosting properly.

Well here is some pictures of the turbo on the truck, and i still cant get it to spool fast enough. It will spin at high rpm but not really at idle, but it is definitly not spinning fast enough.

The turbo bolts right on the manifold.

But it still has the original flange and pipe on the new manifold that came with the turbo, so i connected it back up. But dont I have to block that off or make it smaller so more exhaust goes through the turbo and out the down pipe? As you can see I didnt tie in the down pipe to the original exhaust.

Could a lack of oil flow cause a turbo not to turn fast enough?

how many outlets are on the manifold???
is there only the one going to the turbo, or are there 2, one for the turbo, and one going to the y pipe??

if there are 2 outlets, the turbo will not work, cause it is not getting enough flow to spool properly.

and with it only getting pressure from 4 cylinders, it will not spool very good.
i think of there are 2 outlets on the manifold, you should hook the passenger side to the one that is not connected to the turbo. this will give you full exhaust pressure to spin the turbo, and all exhaust will then go out through the downpipe.

if any of that made sense

Do both of those pipes in the last picture go to the turbo exaust inlet? If so, then I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the other exaust manifold is supposed to get tied into that one. (only take what I say as opinion)

What is this other pipe that came with it. If I am understanding correctly... The turbo bolts onto the left exaust header. There is a pipe from the exaust side of the turbo that goes down to the exaust pipe. You didn't hook this one up yet? And then theres that other port next to the exaust flange in your last pic.?

You need to have a tube that goes from the pass. side ex. manifold to the port thathas a pipe on it in the last pic. BOTH sides need to flow through the turbine housing to get the turbo to spool.

Kyle G. can i ask you where you got that turbo kit at. Never seen that set up before.

When you get it working can you tell me how well it works. If it is cheap i might invest in one because $2000 for an ATS one is too much for me especially since i am starting college.

Thanks

Adam

Well I just got it done and it works pretty good.

I got it from a local diesel mechanic for about 450$ for everything, but i am sorry i researched the company (Turbo Engineering INC) and they don't exist anymore. The kit I have is old, probably from the mid 90's.

So now it wont spin free by hand? sounds like the bearing seized. Did you pre lube the turbo? Or is it seizing only when running? if so check the shaft for play and see if the impeller or turbine are hitting the housing. Could the turbo be some thing the mechanic had replaced because it was bad?
