Worst stucks

Ok. With the recent posts about this forum, lets get some non technical, fun posts going relating our Broncos.

What has been your worst, or most embarassing stuck in your Bronco?

This isn't my worst, but it was embarassing.
A few years ago, on a Saturday after Thanksgiving, my father in law in his Ford pickup, a friend with his EB towing a military trailer and myself went Christmas tree cutting with our families. We turned off the main road where everyone had stopped and headed up the hill breaking trail in about 2' of snow with me in the lead. About 2 miles up the road, the snow had got a bit deeper as we came to a clearing with some nice trees. There was a skid road that turned uphill from us with a wide spot on the downhill side and we decided it would be a good turn around spot. Its at this point that things went downhill for me.

I cut towards the wide spot, thinking that it would make an easier turn for the Bronco with the trailer. I also figured it would help my father in law since he only had 31" tires and the snow was over my 35's. As I started to turn, I misjudged where the edge was, and slid off into the brush. No problem I thought, I would just head toward the wide spot and crawl out back on the road. But the farther forward I went, the farther down the hill into deeper snow. And the farther towards the passenger side I seemed to be leaning. Reverse only spun the back end around so that I was parallel to the road. After a couple more tries, I opted for the winch figuring that if I rolled over where I was at, I would have to leave it until spring.

The only thing sturdy enough to use as a winch anchor was this little 4" dia pine tree. I ran my cable up to that point. My friend ran his cable behind me with a snatch block. We proceeded to crabwalk my Bronco sideways back up to flat ground, hoping with every pull that my little tree would hold.

After I got back on the trail, and the Bronco with the trailer got turned around, my father in law went on up the road breaking trail and turning around at the next opening. Just wanted to prove to us that he didn't need big tires and lockers to get around.

mine was while i was launching a boat in 1985.

the boat was a dual axle trailer 21 ft sea ray. I did not see teh hole someone had dug prior in the beach area due to rapid water rise in the lake the week before. the trailer was wide enuf to go around the hole but the 68 eb was just right and sunk right in. was up to water at window level and 5 people in it... but it was still running. carb was out of the water.

went up to a close by house and borrowed a 61 ford lifted p/u 4x4 , got stung by yellow jackets who had their new nest under the dash, and went back to the beach with it.

told guy who was with me that no matter what he did dont stall the EB as i pulled with p/u. guess that was just to much prompting.

he did and there it was and of course it would not start underwater.

dropped the trailer and let the boat and trailer float arund to the beach and then pulled the 68 out with p/u and up to my house.. Took some weekend to get everything back to working and dried out.

and it still is.

About 6 years ago, i'm heading to a party with my family in the car, and my friend and his girlfriend in his toyota behind me, in his neck of the woods, when i notice a couple of dirt trails from the main road going into the mountains, well we stop, and i ask my friend about it, and he tells me its a old military training area, don't know if they still use it, and if the gate is open, you can go in, no hassles.

well the party we have to go to is not formal, its just a get together at a friends house so were not going to go wheeling, we'll just check it out real quick

no tools, no supplies, no food, no water

we head up the trail to "check it out" (we're not going to go wheeling)

in about 10 minutes we're wheeling.

we are about a hour into the mountain, when i slide into a deep rut, both diffs are on the ground, and tires barely touching the ground, my friend is behind me, so we hook up the tow strap, with a combination of trying to dig out my truck by hand and pulling with the strap.... nothing.

well somewhere in the time we were trying to get unstuck, i guess my friend had shut off his truck..... but his girlfriend was still listening to the stereo. digging some more, and trying to find stuff to stick under the tires, finally were ready and go for another pull. click...click.....click..... -battery dead, normally this wouldn't be a problem, i'll just give him my batt, so he can start up.... oh yeah we don't have tools.

long story short:

jumper cables wouldn't reach, called for help, but they couldn't get in, cause the gate we "trespassed" into was closed, had to spend the night, had to build fire cause up in the mountains with no food, water, blankets, etc. it gets f*****g cold. who knew?

had to limit call time with friends for coordinating rescue tomorrow when gate re-opens, because everyones cellphone is dying, or not getting reception.

the guys spent the night awake feeding the fire while covered head to toe in mud, which wouldn't have happened if we had a shovel, and i was wondering if i was getting divorced when we got home, or would she wait a week.

we got out the next day no problems.

moral of the story: there is no such thing as "we're not going wheeling, we're just going to check it out, i wonder where this trail goes"

It was raining hard (I say this because anydody who has even been caught driving an early Bronco when its raining like piss out of a boot knows that the windshield loves to fog up, especially when you got the ****ty defogger system with only left and right but no middle vent, and the wipers generally do only a adequate job and your visibility generall sux) as I got off the highway and merged into traffic on a busy boulevard in town, getting off in the right hand side and making my way over to the left hand side going west to get into a turn lane.

I make it over no problem, because when you are driving a lifted truck, especially one that 90% of the sheeple have no idea what it is, you have all the right of way you want. Most people are worried you are going to pound them into an applesauce like substance if they look at you crooked!! Not only am I off and over, I got a dreen arrow to turn that I didn't have to wait for. Unfortunately in the lane second to the far left lane there was the back of a hearse sticking out into my turn lane. I noticed I was going to hit at the last second and swerved left and jumped the cement divider strip between eastbound and westbouse traffic to miss clipping the hearse.

I jumped up on it with the 35s like it wasn't even there, but instead of dropping back down into my lane and looking like a badass cruising through the left turn.... my truck decided it would land its left hand tires on the other side into oncoming traffic and make me look like a jackass.

That damn cement strip was exactly as wide as the distance between my tires with the stock axles and tall enough that I could not turn the steering wheel while moving even with power steering to get back over the damn thing!! It was like being stuck in a F*&%$ng tank trap. I tried a few times unsuccessfully to dislodge it myself because I couldn't back off it or drive forward off it because two sings were strategically placed.

I finally had to accept defeat and call a tow truck and wait. Once the driver gopt there he told me he didn't know how to dislodge it.

I asked him if he had a 6x6. Fortunately he did. I put it under the left front tire and used it as a step and got off the median as easily as it had trapped me.

He didn't charge me, and we both had a laugh. Sometimes you just look like a possum's pecker.

Had a bad ball joint and took the truck for 1 last easy ride before intending to fix it. Broke the wheel off in a hole in a pit in the middle of winter in 4' of snow. Was before the guys had 4x4 tow trucks around here. Call my buddy who owned a towing outfit and he came down with a 2 ton and kenworth tow trucks. We aimed the 2 ton at my 77 Bronco and sent it backwards down the slope. After a few attempts, Kenny would winch it back up, we were able to to hook up, lift the front end, throw the tire, spindle etc on the 2 t and winched it up to the next level. Bronco ended up on the top of the hill. Then came the fun part. The Kenny only had 1/4 of fuel, pick-ups up front so we couldn't get the sucker up to the to of the hill without it running out of diesel. Bunch of the guys packed the stuff down behind the Kenny and with a long enough run it finally made it. Was a kodak moment but didn't have a camera

Also backed into a stump with my 75. Got wedged between the gastank and rear pumpkin. Couldn't see it, club run and we couldn't figure out why no one could tug me out and why we had to double line winch from a well anchored truck. I was in peat moss. Well when the gastank strap finally broke we got to see the problem. Bad luck.

In 1970 wife and I took a ride with a fellow sailer in his new Bronco half cab. Cut off the highway and across the dunes on Padre Island, Corpus Christi, Texas. We drove across an old oil field covered by sand and immediately dropped to the axles. Long story short, before it was over we had four 4x4's stuck in there. One of the guy's was working on a canal down the beach and tracked a D-9 Cat back to us and darn near buried it winching us all out.
