My pedal travel is excessive in that it almost goes to the floor before brakes engage. This problem has existed from new and the service department tells me there is no adjustment on 4wheel disc. Only 45,000k on truck, all highway, otherwise brakes work fine. Any ideas?

 

There is an adjustment but Ford will not attempt it due to potential liability involved. If you remove the master cylinder from the brake booster there is an adjuster on the end of the actuator that goes into the master cylinder. You can adjust this VERY carefully about 1/8 of a turn and then test drive to make certain the brakes are not dragging. Once you have them adjusted check them again to be sure that they are not dragging. When you replace your disc pads you may have to readjust the actuator again to accomodate the thicker new pads. Mushy brakes have been a common complaint for the 04-08 F150s.

 

I have this same problem on my 07. Long legs, big feet, cause me to sometimes hit the brake AND the gas at the same time. Makes for interesting stops! Never had this problem on any other car or truck, but at least now I know that it isn't just me.

 

Thank you for all the help. I too have hit the gas and brake at the same time and almost crashed a few times because of it. Size 15 feet dont help the matter I guess.
Im a little apprehensive about making the adjustment although I would certainly like to do something about it. I wonder if Ford might make a recall to fix this issue before someone does crash.

 

just out of curiosity....... have you tried to bleed the brake at all?

as for hitting both pedals at the same time, i have also done that with my winter boots on..... not to fun !!!

 

I just assumed that a new truck would not leave the factory with air in the lines or that any air would have worked its way out in 50,000 kilometers. They have never been worked on for air to get into the system.

 

Can you brake to the point of lockup or ABS engagement? Long travel is a pita, but full braking power would be my concern.

The brakes work excellent otherwise. The truck goes in a straight line with ABS working on icy roads and stops nicely on dry pavement. On a truck with rear drums I would be backing up to adjust them. It is only the excessive travel that is a concern. Thanks for the input, Ill check out the other thread.
