i understand what you mean. I am using grade 8's on my 3 inch body lift. (i just had the spacers in my truck and it was all in pieces) i wouldnt go crazy mudding with it, but i do once and a while. But when it comes to scary i know exactly what you mean!

you cant cut them down, atleast not enough to make 15s fit, then you have the issue of rotors. when you get too radical you get into the cylinder bore that pushes out the piston and you risk cracking the caliper. best bet would be getting a different set of calipers and fabricating some brackets, which could possibly require machining or different rotors on top of all that. best bet would be to stick with 16s and pray. this is also the cheapest and safest solution. trust me, from racing experience, you dont want to cut the calipers. that is ten cents worth of free advice.

grade 5s have a higher shear strength(sideways force, or a cutting force) than the grade 8s, the 8s have a higher tensile strenght(more force from head to nut or force trying to pull the head of the bolt and nut apart)
