I tried to get my D60 to work w/ auto hubs back in the day (4 years ago) and they never worked. They would engage after being fixed, then I'd splash them w/ a little water, then they'd never engage again. So I replaced them with another set of autos (read: I'm an idiot) and same thing all over again. I took them apart and repacked them properly, and then the pass side worked, but not the drivers. Here is what happened w/ the drivers:
Such a stupid and simple failure. The springs couldn't apply level pressure, so the collar gear or whatever you want to call it would bind, even when greased. I tried everything to get them to work... but that just lead to nothing. So...
Moral of the story is go w/ manual hubs as soon as you can. The auto hubs suck and will never ever work reliably.
