boost question

boost question

I have a 1996 f-250 all stock except down pipe and the 6673 filter. I think i might have a boost problem when i am driving on the highway unloaded my boost is 2psi and sometimes just under is that a normal boost on these trucks or low? Even unloaded on a hill it will smoke a little black and towing it smokes black just a little even on flat. I unplugged the sensor and i dont see any change in the psi its still reads 2 psi down the highway.

Mine's pretty much stock and never smokes black. Even when it was bone stock it didn't smoke black.

If your truck is all stock you won't build any significant boost until over 2200 rpm's and the max should be about 16-17 psi and you will need to run some pretty high rpm's to see that.

I have hauled 8000lb trailers to 16,000lb trailers and i dont remember ever getting over 10 psi.

You need to start looking for exhaust leaks, problem with your turbo, or maybe a intake plenum boot is tore. Also possible that the o ring between the turbo and intake Y is broken.

Thats what i have been thinking just wanted to make sure it was on the low side before digging to much. I think my injector o rings are going as well.

Well if that is the case, yes your boost is very low. Follow what Jack said above.

What's the best way to look for leaks on both sides?

You unplugged the sensor and it still reads 2 pounds? Sounds like you need to check your gauge and how is it hooked up?

The exhaust side look for formations of soot around the exhaust manifolds, uppipes, and collector gasket. The pressure side pull the intake Y and inspect the o-ring and boots going to to plenums.

He said he has see 10 psi with a heavy load so didn't really feel that it was the gauge but anything is possible.

I put a t fitting in the map hose to the sensor for the gauge.
