can someone tell a novice engine builder if putting piston ring gap over piston pin bosses is the correct location?

As long as the gaps of each ring do not line up with one another, it shouldn't really matter. Those things will rotate when your engine is running anyway, so starting position isn't a big deal. On engines with three rings, I clock each gap 120° from each other.
