diesels are by nature hard to start when cold. start by checking glow plugs and glow plug relay. also on your truck if you turn the key on wait for the glow plug light to go off turn they key off and back on and repeat a couple times it should start more easly. and depending on the tempature where you live a block heater will be your best freind

If the batteries are more than two years old, replace them. Yes, even if they're 60 or 72 month batteries. The starting demands of a cold diesel are well beyond what most battery manufacturers rate for.
Regular exposure to -20 degree temps (as is possible in SD) turns batteries into yearly (or every-other-yearly) maintenance items.
If the glow plug system is working you should not have trouble starting. The two most common problems with starting an IDI are glow plugs and air in fuel system. Post your problem on the 6.9/7.3 Pre Power Stoke section of the forum and you will get all the help you need from the IDI lovers. If you check through the posts you'll find answers to your problem also.

In 94 Ford used both the IDI & PSD. If you have the IDI, use the "Pre" Powerstroke forum. Don't crank on the starter more than 20 seconds. Let cool for 2 minutes before trying again.
