yeah it has a rag joint. It looked ok and there wasn't any play in that joint so I figured that it did not need replacing. Was that wrong?

no, you'd know if it was bad by inspecting it as you stated you did.

It was just a thought.

if you were spinning the inlet shaft as much as you said with no movement of the pitman arm I'm sure you are probably right by tightening up the meshload screw/stud.

But I'm no expert on it, luckily there are experts here on the whole steering box topic.

funny Dennis hasn't chimed in yet.

C9UZ-3A525-A .. Steering Coupler (Rag Joint) is still available from Ford.

From FTE sponsor Direct Ford Parts (Gaudin Ford-Las Vegas NV) Suggested retail price: $75.00 / FTE member net: $53.01

Fits: 1969/74 F100/250 2WD / 1969/74 F350 / 4WD IS DIFFERENT!

NAPA sells a rebuilt box, but "rebuilt" mainly means resealed. Most of the rebuilt gearboxes...by now...are only good for a year or so.
The REAL problem with these gear boxes is addressed by Red Head by installing the bearing in the housing that Ford left out.

The seal kits are available from Ford, NAPA...other parts stores.

F3AZ-3E502-A .. Input Shaft Seal Kit & D7AZ-3E501-A .. Sector Shaft Seal kit..
