Help for new Ford Guy
I have a 74 Ford F100 with a 460. I think the motor came from an 87? Lincoln or Merc.
I have looked in the PAW inserts in Hot Rod Magazine for rebuild kits and, depending on what you need, there are up to 4 choices available for the 460. Your options can range from year to year and even month of the year. Should I even bother with rebuilding this motor or scrounge the junkyards and find a 68-72 Lincoln/Merc and yank out the 460? I am on a tight budget but will be throwing misc speed parts in. I love to find power through head work.
That brings me to my next question. Can I decode the block for the date it was made and rebuild it.....and THEN find some of these "DOVE" heads and throw them on there? OR can I have the heads that are on it ported polished and shaved with over sized valves and have something BETTER than the doves?
Thanks
Bill

For what it's worth-check the post on BIGSTEVE's ?-429 block ID. D0VE heads have LARGE ports and valves but still need port work done to gain performance-these also have small chambers 72cc as compared to later with 92-95cc. Police Intercepter heads are the best, so I've been advised-however, just try to find a pair! These have small ports, large valves and small chambers-the perfect combo for torque and horsepower!

Have you tried www.naparts.com. They seem to have better prices and good selection on engine kits. I've bought several kits for SmallBlock Fords and InlineSix Fords. I'm getting ready to overhaul a BigBlock Ford and definitely will order from them again. I've been building on the performance side and am very pleased with what I've built. For eight dollars more you can upgrade your kit with Fel-Pro gaskets and depending on the application you can also upgrade the camshaft. Hope this helps.

First of all, to the best of my knowledge, Ford only put the 460 in trucks and vans in the late 80's. Actually, I'm pretty sure that Ford stopped putting the 460 in passenger cars in the late 70's. I'm not positive on that, but pretty darn sure. As far as rebuilding your motor, I'd keep your block and just see if you can locate a set of the DOVE heads. That would be your easiest way to upping the performance of your motor without spending an entire paycheck. Hope that helps.
