2002 Navigator burned to the ground

My wifes Navigator caught fire yesterday. I was parked from the evening before. It just went up in flames all by it self? Any body have similar problem? Any response from Ford? Any recomendations.

Did you have the cruise control switch recall done? This sounds like what caused it. The switch goes bad, leaks fluid to the constantly hot wires going to the switch....and walah...you have fire, which destroys your vehicle. Hope nobody got hurt or it did not damage anything else.

I'm not sure if yours was covered but Ford has a recall concerning the cruise control cut off switch that can short out and catch fire causing the vehicle to burn up. I'll do some looking to see if your was covered.

Here, I found this. It looks as though your vehicle year is included. http://www.ennislaw.com/ford_fire_recall.html

You can tell by looking to see if it's been done. I'll take a photo of mine to show you what it looks like.

Ok, the first photo is my wifes 97, we haven't done the recall repair on hers yet but we've diconnected the switch (notice nothing plugged into the pink connector) which is what you need to do if you haven't done it yet. The switch is on the end of the brake fluid reservior.

The next photo shows the recall repair harness on my 99 (notice the blue lables and tags).

Ford does the recall repairs for free. Make sure you diconnect this until then. It'll make your cruise control inoperable till then.

Sorry to hear about your vehicle. At least by the sounds of things you didn't have it parked in the garage resulting in the loss of your house also which has happened to others. I think it's even resulted in loss of life. I would imagine you'd be able to sue Ford over this. The previous link I sent out might give you some help with this.

I don't think that he should be able to sue Ford over this, because it was a well knowen recall, it was all over the news, papers and internet.

Thanks for the replies. No need to see the photos of what the part looks like, the Navigator is now a pile of burned metal. The recall might have been issued, but I would have assumed the part was just faulty, not hazardous. I hope insurance pays the note off.
