Thinking about an 08-questions

There might be some nice rebates coming so Im considering a 08 xl work truck. I have a few questions. First, it will be a 2 wheel drive. I will have to order it because of what I want on it.

I want the 5.4 with either 3.73 or 4.10 limited slip gears. I find it strange on Ford site that they charge 300 for the 3.73 but 0 for the 4.10. Does anybody have a reg cab truck 4x2 configured in either mannor and could you comment please. The truck will be used to tow up to about 5k lbs. What kind of penalty in gas do the 4.10 gears give you?

Are there any known issues known like spark plugs blowing out or did they fix that? Thanks.

Gear and sparkplug

I am pretty sure the plug problem was fixed before the 08 model year. There was a thread on here recently discussing a change to the head/plug deisgn. Search Spark Plugs and you should find something recent addressing this.

With regards to the gear ratio. 4.10 all the way. You said work truck and you said towing. This is a no brainer, especially with the 4.10 being no charge.

I am paying $600 dollars Monday morning to have my sick little 3.55 taken out and a 4.10 put in. That's how much I believe in a deeper gear for these heavy trucks.

I have been told that if most of your driving is around town stop and go that gas mileage may even improve due to the fact the deeper gear helps get the truck moving easier. even if it suffers a little I will be much happier with my truck. Before the Edge and this pending gear change it was a dog.

Well, I think I messed up. I dont think you can get 4.10 gears in a 4x2 truck. Thats why they were at no charge. Its 300.00 for the limited slip which I think is high but I have to have it. The 4.10 gears you can get with a 4x4.

Also, what about tires. They come with those hankooks. I know its a el cheapo tire. One of my friends has a real stripped down 150 as a company truck and thats what he has but he has not complained. I was wondering if its worth 325.00 to upgrade to the all terrain tires? I do go off road at times and get into a few compromising positions but its not a regular thing. I just cant justify a 4x4.

Anybody with a reg cab 5.4 with 3.73 can you please comment on gas mileage, power in general, and your opinion on how this would tow? I appreciate it.

I think you'll like the truck. We have a 2007 regular cab, XL, 5.4 with 3.73 limited slip and with 4X4 - it's a nice truck for the money. You lose a lot of weight with the XL package and it makes a difference on gas mileage. We did upgrade the interior options some and that is worth the money. The exterior is plenty ugly but we don't care. This truck in high altitude New Mexico will often average 18 mpg driving up and down steep grades with plenty of reserve power.

Haven't towed anything with it yet but hard to figure it's not up to a pretty good task. And, not one problem in 20,000 miles.

And, I forgot to mention. This truck came with the Hankook tires which we were very skeptical about. They were not bad tires for a minimum equipment package. Changed out at about 15,000 miles for better winter tires but they were not worn out. Never had a problem with them.

I have hanook tires on my e250 company van with 37,000 and still look good. Alot better than the continental's that came with the F150. They were done at 22,000.

Thanks for the info on the tires. I was thinking xl reg cab 4x2, tow package, 5.4, cruise, Air Conditioning, automatic, and 3.73 LS and thats about it. It comes up to 22,910. There are no rebates in my area yet.

Im really torn between the f150 and chevy. I hate that ford does not give us a tachometer in the base truck. The f150 weighs about 300 lbs more than the chevrolet. I know its built a little better as far as being strong but I cant help to wonder if it will be as reliable over the long haul. I drive them till they drop. I almost fell like its the luck of the draw and it may come down to price for me.

ck1404, that sounds good that you are getting 18 mpg. I figured something like this would only get around 15 on average. What is the best you have ever done mileage wise? Does the truck feel like it has plenty of power? If you bought it again, would you do anything different? This is a lot of money to me and I want to make sure I get it right the first time.
Thanks for helping me out.

I am more confused than ever. When I go to fords website to build a truck I was goofing around and put in a 8 foot bed and clicked on 4.10 gears and it said the 8 ft bed had to be replaced with the 6.5 bed. This is on reg cab 4x2.
It makes no sense that they have the limited slip 4.10 at no charge and the 3.73 limited slip at 300.00.

Can somebody tell me if this is correct? It does seem odd to get 4.10 gears in a 4x2 truck. GM does not offer them in a 4x2. 3.73 is the best you can get with them. Is is possible Fords site is wrong? I think I am losing my mind.

I believe if you get the heavy duty pkg you get the 410's with the 2wd..

Thank you! I dont think I need all of that and the way I configured the truck with 3.73 gears it showed it would tow up to 8500 lbs. Thats a lot but I dont have anything near that. Being a cheap skate I was hoping to get off with an optional gear at no charge instead of having to pay 300.00 of the LS 3.73.

I think the 3.73 would be fine in a 4x2 and may be the best of both worlds. Ford needs to work on their website.

Can somebody tell me where I can find the order guide? Thanks.
