need help buyin a diesel

hey guys ive been browsing the forums for awhile now and recently became a member. Im in the process of looking for a new truck. Im looking at 2006-7 6.0l and the new 2008 6.4l I love the styling on the 08 but im not so sure im sold on it mainly due the emissions controll and engine.
i have a few questions on it.
1. Would i be able to alter the exhaust on an 08? And i have heard that the 08 burns so clean that it barely blows any black smoke, is this true?
2. Would i be able to chip an 08 without having it permanently burned onto the computer? i have heard that new diesels cant avoid this. Would i be able to do the same with an 06?

i have test driven both engines and can honestly say that i like the 6.0 better. however most people are asking just as much for their 06 as the dealerships are asking for a new 08.

I'd love to hear your opinions on the 2 engines. ive been reading some posts and ive seen that some guys have problems and others are lovin their trucks.
thanks for the help!

Older diesels are going to be holding their values a lot longer now that the new emissions friendly trucks are here. I don't know much about the 6.4s but you CAN alter the exhaust from the DPF back. Touching the cats and the DPF will screw with your warranty and possibly getting the rig licensed. Also I believe even pre-emissions friendly trucks, the dealership can tell if there's been a tuner or programmer. I think I've read it takes a lot to get that info for the 6.0, but who knows about the 6.4. I'm sure more people will chime in tonight and tomorrow to clarify a bit.

Ford has taken a very harsh stance on the 6.4s and they don't want you to modify anything on that truck. Most places have you sign a waiver that says you realize modding it in any way voids your warranty and that would include a cat/dpf back exhaust(they say even the tip of the 6.4s exhaust is intregal to the system). I wouldn't be surprised if that would also include an aftermarket radio if your dealership is really bad about it. If you want to mod do it with the 6.0 not only for the reason above, but also most aftermarket parts are still in beta phase, it usually takes about 2 yrs before the aftermarket is really good at their parts, especially now that they are other issues that they have to contend with that they previously didn't have to.
