identifying my 460 engine
|
To find the exact date of manufacture for your 460 will be difficult without factory sticker that was on the driver's side valve cover of your engine. I can get you an approximate dateline by deciphering the casting #'s.
Look at the intake manifold casting #, it's near the firing order, it will have at least four digits (example D6VE), Look at the cylinder head(s) there is a casting # on the head just under where the valve cover bolts to the head (example D3VE-A2A), you can also look at the block's casting number that is located on the passenger side beneath the starter (ex. D1VE). It is easy to decipher these codes once you do it 1 or 2 times, here goes.
The first character of the casting # (ex D6VE-9425) is the decade in which part was produced. A- 1940's B- 1950's C-1960's D-1970's E- 1980's and so on.
The 2nd character tells us what year of that decade part was produced, using our ex. says that the D6VE part was manufactured in the year 1976.
The 3rd character tells us what model of car/truck part was designed for, in this case (V) designates our part as belonging to a Lincoln, as far as 460's go I can give you a few of the model lines they were used in so you can figure this out with your casting # (A) full size Ford (C) Torino/Elite (J) Industrial engine (M) Mercury (S) Thunderbird (T) Truck (U) Econoline van (V) Lincoln.
The 4th character tells us what division released the part, using D6VE, (E) is the engine division. other ex. are (A)Chassis div. (B)Body div. (M) SVO Motorsport div. (X)Former muscle parts or SVO production.
There are base codes that designate what type of engine part we have. 6015-cylinder block 6090/6049-cylinder head 6110-piston 6205-connecting rod 6303/6300-crankshaft 9425-intake manifold
On all these parts there is a smaller 4 digit number that tells us the day of manufacture, ex. 6B21 1st character is again year of the decade.
2nd ch. is month code, they go in alphabetical order(except they leave out the letter "I") A- Jan. B- Feb. C-March and so on.
3rd & 4th ch. are the day code, our's is 21, by using the casting numbers and date codes we can come up with the date of manufacture, type of part, and model line that part was intended. Our ex. "say's" that it's a 1976 Lincoln intake manifold that was made on Feb. 21st of '76. I hope this helps in any way.
