exhaust question

Im doing a cat back dual exhaust ,Should I go with 3in. or 2.5 pipes?
I have a 302.

I used to have a 302 in my 87 and the guy at the exhaust shop said a 3 inch would be better to let it breath a little better. I have a 351W in my truck now with 3 inch duel exhaust out the side.

2.25 or 2.5 dual and single 3 inch no bigger than that and that was recommended for my 351

2.5 for true duals 3 inch for single.
