'97 4.6 Oil leak

OK, I crawled under my truck to find the source of a small coolant leak (lower hose clamp, no big deal) and noticed oil on one of the hoses that goes to the factory remote oil filter. Neither end of the hose is wet, so it seems that there must be a pin hole in the middle somewhere. It looks to me like the hoses aren't replaceable. Do I need to buy the whole assembly that goes from the engine to the filter adapter? Anyone else have a leak like this? Thanks.

You can either buy one or go to a shop that makes hoses and have one made.

Sounds like your oil cooler line, that runs from the back of your oil filter mount, to the crank case, or block.
On my 98 4.6, F150, I noticed the same leak, and fixed it myself.
You will have to use a crows foot, not sure on the size, cant remember, probably a 15 or 16mm, if my memory is correct.
Its really tight in there next to the power steering pump and a crows foot was the only way I was able to get it out. Crankcase side was easy.
My cooler line was prettty expensive since I wanted to keep it OEM on this repair, I believe it was around 200 from the dealer. Napa had it alot cheaper, but not sure if it was OEM.
The power steering line(o-ring), that mounts right next to the oil cooler line, also has a tendency to leak, gotta replace that one next.
Hope this helps.

I double checked, it's not the oil cooler line. It's one of the large ones that go to the filter. Looks like the whole assembly needs to be removed, including the filter adapter and engine block mount. I suppose the lines could be made at a hose shop. Look like a PITA.

That is your oil cooler line. Theres nothing else back there. The oil cooler lines circulate the oil back and forth between the two.

It's the filter line that's leaking. The oil filter is up forward of the driver side wheel well. The cooler lines run right next to it, but they are smaller.

On the 4.6 (I think 5.4 too), the oil filter is right behind the bumper on the driver's side. The line that's leaking is the oil line that goes to it, not sure if it's the supply or return line. Very slow leak. Still trying to find out what would need to be replaced to fix it.

I have the exact same engine in my 98 F150. Maybe Im not calling it by the proper name, but thats the name of the part that the service manager at the ford dealership that I bought the line from called it. If its two rubber hoses that are mounted at the lower left side of the engine block, which feed to the remote filter (up front under the drivers side bumper), than that is the same part we are reffering to.
Mine was leaking from the o-rings at the mounting bracket end and leaking down to the lowest point of the line, making it hard to see exactly where the leak was coming from.

Is it leaking a puddle on the ground? I have had a wet remote oil filter line for 3 years now. Its still wet right now. Never has it started to leak enough to drop on the ground. In my opinion, just keep an eye on it and save your money for other repairs. This is typically a non issue.

Haven't seen any on the ground. If I wipe the hose off, it takes a day or two for another big drop to form.

I have a 97 F150 5.4L 4x4 with the same problem. While under the truck replacing the oil filter last night I noticed one of the lines appeared to be wet and leaking, possibly coming down from the remote oil filter adapter to the lowest point. I haven't cleaned up the line yet but will to get a better idea on the volume of the leaking. Hopefully it will only be the O ring(s) as the "assembly" including both supply and return hose cost $ 233.00 at the dealership. I have not tried some of the other parts houses.

Glad to hear it might be a slowwww leak and not a got to replace it immediately because I could loose all my oil and shell out the engine.
