In maine if your tires stick out past the body any where even down by your mud flap you are going to get a fine. They tryed to get me on my bronco for that. but I got the fine cut down from 150 bucks to 50 bucks by fixing the prob and I took pics of it fixed in to court with me.

Just to update since this floated back up - the last I've heard or seen is that the new law died last fall - for the time being. They guy I talked to wasn't sure what rumbling is happening now, and I haven't found anything on web web since an October PDF summary from one of the hot rod associations saying the law was killed. The "guy I talked to" is Lenny Shaeffer, who runs a pretty awesome custom shop in Woburn and can be seen around the boards as a pretty tireless advocate for freedom wrt things like exhaust and customization. That said, his answer to the title of this thread would probably be a resounding "yes".

New law or not. Any exhaust that is louder than stock is banned already. How do they measure it? Dont know, but if it louder than stock it can be failed by any state inspection station.

The law that they are trying to pass is the sale and installation of all aftermarket exhaust systems.

Basically the way I see it is...

There are 3 things that are banned in the worst place to live in
New England... Fun and enjoyment of ANY kind. Working on anything yourself is also banned. If your car breaks, bring it to the mechanic because in m*** they try to tell you you’re in violation of all kinds of ordinances and crap. The third thing that’s banned in the most craptastic state of dismay in <ST1New England is employment. Jobs are not allowed. So in short I hate this state, the FIRST chance I get, I’m leaving. and in closing I say, to anyone who is even thinking about moving here, quit your job, junk your truck, and pay your neighbor to kick you in the groin, and you'll still live in a better place!!

Last I checked, they hadn't banned bourbon, so it can't be all bad! Besides, one thing I notice about these here New England states is that if you don't like one, you're never further than 20 miles from another one!

Man, I gotta say, I pulled into the inspection station with my beatup truck and not one question was asked. No neighbors have complained about my drums, though I don't play them much; I went to a block party in the street with kegs and BBQ, and the friggin' mayor of Newton showed up; and people introduce themselves. I went high-RPM-ing by a cop this morning with my Stromung resonatorless catback, nothing, and I was following a Ram with some blaringly loud Lou's Custom Exhaust setup. I think I know where you're comin from, I just haven't seen it yet. I'm sure it's coming. You want douchebaggery, I urge you to visit the town where we made the mistake of renting an apartment before we moved up here: Greenwich, CT. Ferraris with automatics there. I heard 'em!
