Smile How do I know what year my 351 W is?

I recently purchased a 60 f-100 for myself as a project truck. It needs some minor body work, and a new coat of paint. Other than that is really solid and a steal for $900. It runs and drives, however when you go to accelerate, the truck wants to sputter out and die. I had to put my foot on the brake and give it gas just to get the rpms up high enough to get it not to stall while turning it around in the street to back it into my garage. Anyway, I am trying to figure out what year the motor is that is in it from whoever did the swap out. I have the model number/ serial number off of the carb, but need to know the motor so that I can better research the problems with the motor. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

If you get under the truck, on the passenger side under the cylinder head will be the block casting numbers. Put a good light under there so you can see. Post the numbers and letters here and we will decipher them for you. Welcome to the board!

Also, you can look to see if it has an egr under the carb. Or if it has air tubes coming out the back of the heads, or if the engine block is grey, etc....

I used this site to decipher the year and make my engine came from:

Good luck, sounds like a great deal. Post some pictures for us.

Ok, here's what I got, or don't have is more like it. I can't find the casting numbers..., Sigh. Between the headers and the oversized engine mounts that the previous owner fabricated I can't see anything. Not to mention the guy shot the engine with cobalt blue paint to make it look cleaner. But he didn't clean or sand anything before hand. Anyway, Here are some numbers that I did find, I'm not sure if they will help?

On the front of the manifold was 13726548

On the carb was B0457-2
0348
And on the passenger side header is D30E 9430 DA 16?
I thought maybe the D30E was an identification for the motor? But not too sure? I will try and again this week to see if I can find anything else.
Also I want to learn more about all the generations of f100. Is there a good book that covers the differences between the generations of motors and components, etc. etc. I just want to be able to know a little more about my truck. I went from harley's to my f100, obviously there is a little more to the 351 w than a v-twin. Anyway, anything that you could suggest would be greatly appreciated as always.

Thanks

D3OE indicates a 1973 model year for a passenger car. Any year newer than 1973 can also use this part, so that would eliminate 1972 and earlier, though not completely, as the PO still could have bolted the newer manifold onto an older block. If you remove a valve cover and look for a 4 digit code stamped, that'll tell you the year of the head. knowing the head will be of most benefit.

On the Driver's side of the Block directly in front of the cylinder head there should be an impression stamped number that indicates the assembly date. If the block hasn't been decked, it should be there.

A similar 4 digit code like Eman said will also tell you.

Well i pulled the valve covers off, the passenger's side has 1b15, or IB15, and the drivers side says IB23 or 1B23, the only other numbers that were there was 351 and WF. There was a circle imprinted that read 8 1 9 7 5 in that order top to bottom.

Heads were manufactured 1971 February 15th and 23rd. Good heads. Could be 1981, but not likely if there aren't any air passages coming out the back of them.

I believe those are the date of mfg. The 1 is year of decade, I don't think the 351W were made in 61 or 81 so likely 71. The B is month so February and the 15 and 23 are days of the month.

The 81975 is the p/n I think?

Never mind Havi beat me to it LOL.

Well, when it's as cold outside as it is right now, I have nothing better to do than to refresh my page every 3 seconds, lol. Usually I'm the one getting beat, too, lol.
