exaust smell in heater?

now I have replaced the fuel pump because of the smell of fuel and it was leaking, And I have been trying to find an exaust leak somewhere, But what I want to know is where does the heater get the outside air from maybe I can duct it to some fresh air? or does that heat shield that used to be on the heater box have to do with this problem?

do you only get the smell in the morning when you first fire up the truck and turn the heater on?

the heater gets fresh air from the cowl between the hood and windshield. look on the passenger side about 4" to 6" from the radio antenna. look down in that area and you should see the intake.

The reason I ask, In the A.M. during winter,, when you first fire up a diesel, the cold dense air keeps the diesel exhuast close to the ground. You will smell more diesel fumes than in the summer (warmer months).

Yes. All fresh air intake on a ford is from the cowell.

If you are having problems with exhaust smell, make sure you clean the grate off if there is snow over it. You might be forcing it to suck air from a less desireable source.

That or you have a leaky area in the engine compartment where its also sucking air from.

Not just on start up but worse on start up. I also get it as soon as I stop at a light or even slow in traffic.

My truck does the same thing. It's because my up-pipes are leaking badly. Think about it, when the truck is cold the pipes are cold and haven't expanded like metal does. So it leaks worse. And since there is really no place for the exhaust under the hood to go, it will find any little gromet hole, or gap to go through. And your firewall has lots of those. I would be willing to bet, if you look at your up-pipes at the turbo, you'll find your answer.

I agree with duck. It sounds like your uppipes are leaking. Mine are so when it is cold I can smell and hear the leaks but after she warms up I can't hear it anymore but the leak is still there.
