Just got a 94 F250 7.3 PSD w/ around 200k on it. The truck has always been maintained well as far as scheduled oil and filter changes, but I have heard so much about the different oils...Some of them foaming and causing camshaft scaring; I want the truck to last and run at its best so what kind of oil do you guys think I should run? Shell or Chevron?
For the last 1.5 million miles we have used Rotella and 1/4 Lucas oil additive. It has never let us down and today had the rearend apart on a 250 and its as tight as new at 183,000 and the oil was clean looking.
i use delo 400 also. of course, it seems that the synthetics are better. if i could afford it then i would use amsoil or royal purple, but delo 400 does good so i keep using it.
Shell Rotilla T 15-40, year round. Temps dip down into low teens on cold nights, but I like the protection that the 15-40 has. Change the oil every 2500 Miles, (which may be excessive)
But at twice the price and read the specs. It all has to be the same mil spec. Oil is oil. I'm an aviation mechanic and the only thing we usually go by is the oil sample every 50 hrs.
Still too soon to tell. I have less than 1K on it. Oil analysis will tell the story. Also last time I tried Rotella 5W40 it wasn't worth using but I have a different bypass filter I will be using that will require less oil to be added thru the OCI.
I changed to the rotella sythetic two years ago, only put about 7K miles on per year and change the oil every fall. I noticed easier start ups when its in the single digits also I can still see through the oil as its draining. I didn't notice that when I used the regular rotella or the motorcraft changed at about 4K. I drive an 04 van at work w/ 6.0, already has 150K and they change the oil every 7K or so replaced with oil supplied by the lowest bidder and it's still hanging in there and I'm a lot harder on it than I am on my own truck.
