Shreaded belt?!?

Ok, so I took my EL in this morning to have 'em look at it. Yesterday it started making some noise that sounded as if a pully was going bad... just a faint metal on metal sound.

Dealer says its just the belt starting to shread (10k miles). I dont trust this dealership any farther than I could throw 'em, but I'm in a small town 2 hours away from a decent Ford shop.

What are your thoughts??? I dont see how a belt could cause the noise -- and I dont see how a belt with only 10k miles could start "shreading" without some other cause.

It's possible. Every product has a percentage that are defective. If a new belt cures the noise, then whats there to worry about?

The tensioner is possibly the problem, they tend to get crooked over time and it sometimes forces the belt off or shreds it.
